knoxcotn-digest Wednesday, December 1 1999 Volume 01 : Number 002 Date: Wed, 01 Dec 1999 13:04:48 -0500 From: "Billie R. McNamara" <knox@tngenweb.org> Subject: Let's get this party started!!! Welcome everyone to our new list! Rose-Anne Cunningham, the Knox County TNGenWeb site queen, is jointly hosting this list with me, but she's divided up the responsibilities by saying, "I'll do page stuff, and you can do list stuff." That sounded more than fair.... <g> Please send a message to the list with questions, comments, surname interests, or whatever, to let us know why you're here. I always like to know whom people are, also, so my fellow list members aren't just a bunch of names lurking in the background. You never know what else you have in common! I'll start -- then it's YOUR turn. Remember, if you don't spout off, no one else will do it for you! I was born in Knoxville, grew up on the east side of the county, went to high school in Jefferson County, attended Carson-Newman but did my last year at UT-Knoxville. After living around the country for 20 years, I moved back to Jefferson County nearly 5.5 years ago and live near the Knox/Jefferson/Sevier county intersection -- where 50% of my mama's ancestry is located. I'm married to a retired submariner who's presently in graduate school at UT-Knoxville and have a stepson at Eastern Connecticut University. Although I'm a paralegal by profession, I took some time off from that and manage a "junk" shop for my mama. I've been interested in genealogy for <gulp> 23 years now. I have been a guest speaker and seminar leader, written books and articles, edited journals, and taught genealogy courses for local colleges and organizations for about 16 years. I am honored to have won awards for some of the above. I started the Jefferson County Genealogical Society, and I was the first coordinator of the TNGenWeb project. I have been involved in on-line genealogy for 8 years and do my best to manage some mailing lists and Web sites. Besides being born there, my only genealogical connection to Knox County is that some of my ancestors went there when they got high-falutin' and moved to town. Well, I did have a couple of early families in East Knox County, but they're a big ole mystery. I know generally about the county's history, but I'm really only familiar with communities and families on the east side (the area between the Holston and French Broad Rivers and within 5 miles north of the Holston River). I am particularly interested in the Welsh immigrants to Knox, Anderson, Campbell, and Roane Counties after 1860. My surnames with Knox County connections are Acuff = Asbury = Brickey = Bryan = Butler = Cate = Coons = Davies = Gillespie = Jackman = Langston = Lindsey = Martin = McCall = McCarty = McCombs = Miles = Ramey = R(h)emy = Underwood and a few gazillion collateral lines. Of these, the only ones I personally research are Acuff and McCall. I dabble with the McCombs line (one of those frustrators) and rely on the kindness of distant cuzzins for info on the others. So, there you are. Now tell me about yourself! ------------------------------ End of knoxcotn-digest V1 #2 ****************************
