Subject: Great to Have a List for Knox Co.!

My stumbling block in researching my ancestors of Knox Co. is James Cox, b:

abt 1792, VA; d: ?, most likely Knox Co. He married Elizabeth Gammon, 10

Oct 1810, Knox Co, daughter of Harris and Levicey Brawner Gammon.

I am in dire straits to identify James and Elizabeth's children. My second

gr-grandmother was Myra (of James) Cox who married Wm. Petree in 1837. I

cannot locate anyone who has the names of Myra's parents or siblings.

There were three known James Coxes in Knox Co at the same time, one being

James Cox, Sr; James Cox, Jr; and my James Cox. The James Cox Sr & Jr have

been identified by a seasoned researcher and I am not from that lineage.

Leaving me with just one that I cannot find the information that I need to

connect me to this family. Anyone looking for this family or have

information to share?

I would appreciate any suggestions or help in locating my ancestors. Will

share info.

Thanks,

C.G.

Hi,

I'm researching PAULs, WALKERs, and possibly BROWN, HAY(E)S and

WRIGHTs all in the early 1800s in Knox Co. The Browns and Hayes

families were in Morgan Co. by 1830, the Paul line in Morgan by

1835, WALKERs were all over between Roane and Morgan and the

WRIGHT line was in Fentress/Overton by 1810 but may have passed

through Knox in their travels. I'm very interested in early

Knox Co. history and always glad to share whatever I can.

Used to live in Knoxville, got my M.S. from UT in 1986 (how

'bout them Vols!) Still have lots of family there and think all

of East TN is just about the most beautiful place there is!

Hope to hear from <lots> of relatives!

Dusti

Hi, Vickie! Rose-Anne and I are working on the newspaper history of Knox

County. I'll look through it for your John Bain Hood.

I'm sure you are aware of the Swann families in Jefferson County. I had a

student in one of my genealogy classes at UT who may be one of your

cousins. Her name is Barbara Swan Guinn <b1s2g3@cdc.net>, and she's

originally from Farragut. Have you corresponded?

Hi, Patti! My cousin is a Duncan descendant from the Anderson County

line. I heard a rumbling that there was a new Duncan family history

out. I'll see what I can find out.

Are you related to our Congressman from Knoxville, John James Duncan, Jr.?

The "plantation" comment is intriguing. We had very few farms that were

what most of us today think of plantations (like Tara), but we did have a

lot of land owners who called their farms plantations -- I've even seen it

in deeds! Everyone should remember that when doing research in this area <g>.

Kelly isn't a name I've had personal experience with in Knox County -- but,

if I run across any of them, I'll holler!

Hi, David! Since you're new to this addictive pasttime <g>, you probably

don't know that about 20 years ago, Robert McGinnis transcribed over

100,000 tombstone records in Knox County. Those index cards are at the

McClung Historical Collection in Knoxville

<http://web.utk.edu/~kizzer/ethisctr/>. Robert knows where nearly everyone

is buried in this county!

Hi, C. G.! You certainly have a mystery.... Cox is not a horribly common

name in the area, so it's not like you're poking around for a Smith (or

worse, a McClung <vbg>).

Have you checked the McClung Historical Collection's vertical files on

families? You might find some old loose papers there that were deposited

by a researcher. Many people have done that for over 25 years -- sent in

copies of their own work. When I did professional research years ago, I

always turned my files over to them so they'd be accessible.

Also, a word of caution to everyone: ALWAYS backtrack on the work of

anyone else who tells you they've identified a historic figure to make sure

they didn't make a research mistake. I'd be offended if someone didn't

back-check my source references and methodology!

Thanks, I need all the help I can get. All I know is that my GGGrandmother's name

is Elizabeth Duncan and that she was the mother of John Louis Kelly. I say that

because I have yet to find a marriage license showing her married to John L or

J.M. Kelly. Until I can link her to a Kelly, I can't be sure of my Duncan line.

Thanks Patti
