Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Life Stages worm/virus hitting genealogists

This was on a mailing list I'm on. Thought it was worth passing along.

These demons are getting smarter:

An SHS file is a Microsoft Scrap Object file. These

types of files

are executable and can contain a wide variety of

objects. The

scrap object (SHS) extension does not appear in Windows

Explorer even if all file extensions are displayed.

Norton Anti-Virus has a page with info at

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/vbs.stages.a.html

They say it's very difficult to remove if you accidentally execute it.

Get your virus software updates TODAY! Norton for Win95/98 is at

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download/us-files/0619i32.exe

>This worm or virus came as Life_Stages.txt.shs. It is an attachment, so

>delete, then go to your deleted files and delete again!

>

>It does like the others, only I am told it does a better job of sending

>itself to EVERY address in your book.

Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Thank our own very astute Rose-Anne!

Rose-Anne saw something on eBay that distressed her. She called me. I

called the Anderson County Archivist. From today's Knoxville paper:

Historic document up for auction

CLINTON -- A piece of 19th century Anderson

County history has become a present-day Internet

mystery.

Local officials were amazed to learn that an

Anderson County public record dating from 1876

has been offered for sale on e-Bay, the Internet

Web site where a myriad of items are electronically

auctioned.

The document is from an 1876 court case. It's a

23-page lawsuit by the Knoxville and Ohio Railroad

Co. against John H. Hicks.

County Historian Mary Harris said she doesn't know

how long the papers have been missing from the

courthouse.

"It's a document that needs to be put back in the

records," Harris said. "It's a misdemeanor to

auction off court records. We should demand to

have it sent back."

The historian said a friend of hers who lives in

Jefferson County saw the item listed for auction for

$9.99 and that the seller is listed as a resident of

Littleton, Maine.
