Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Knox County POORHOUSE Information Needed

Recently I published a new website called The POORHOUSE STORY at

http://www.poorhousestory.com It is a clearinghouse for information about

19th century American Poorhouses.

Since we announced the website on the statewide TENNESSEE e-mail list, we

have received several comments and questions and have posted many of these

on our page for Tennessee at

http://www.poorhousestory.com/poorhouses_in_tennessee.htm

Today we posted a question from a reader about a poorhouse in KNOX County.

Here it is:

"I know there was a poorhouse in KNOX COUNTY, Knoxville, Tennessee. My

g-grand father was there from abt 1930-34. It was called 'The George

Mahoney Home' in a place called Mahoneyville, Knoxville, Tennessee. I went

there and a state prison is there now. I went to the McClungs Library in

Knoxville and a helpful Librarian said yes, there was a place BUT no records

were kept. I feel like there should have been some kind of records

somewhere." daffadil@alltel.net

Both Daffadil and I would love to hear from you with any further information

about this poorhouse. (She because she wants to know more about her

g-grandfather; and me because I would like to also see more information

about your poorhouse history on The POORHOUSE STORY website.)

Thanks,

Linda Crannell

Hi, everybody. I'll answer what I can...too lazy to get up and get my Knox

County history books to see what's there <g>.

The Knox County Poor Farm/Workhouse was on the old Maloney farm on

Maloneyville Road (not Mahoneyville). The Knox County Sheriff's Department

maintains a long-term detention facility there (for people who're sentenced

to more than a night in jail but less than a year). There is a

cemetery there, and Robert McGinnis has transcribed it.

Records were maintained. Sadly, no records have surfaced at this time that

relate to specific individuals who lived there. The County Court Minutes

have references to the home and its maintenance. I've also looked for

records from the Beverly Hills Sanitarium (Knox County's TB hospital) and

the Deaf-and-Dumb Asylum. I keep praying they're in SOMEONE's attic!

After I get a chance to relieve my headache, I'll see what else I can dig

up. Headache is from a good thing: I rescued a bushel basket of old

papers, letters, negatives, pictures, etc., from a man in Unicoi County who

was going to burn them. But, the environmental residue (a/k/a mold and

mouse poop) are high on my allergy list....

Hi All,

Yes the George Maloney Home did exist at the Maloneyville location from

about 1939 until the closing of Hillcrest Nursing Institute in 1986.

Basically Knox County Pauper records policy was to destroy all records after

seven years, but Some records have been spared over the years. There is an

unconfirmed rumor that Hillcrest Beverly has some of the patient records but

refuse to release them to the County Archives because of the Privacy Laws. I

do have partial records for burials from Three seperate cemeteries which were

and are located at the farm. By the way the cemeteries are not on the jail

property, but on the adjoining Golf Course. And also George Maloney was not

the first workhouse/Poor House, There are mentions of at least four others

dating back to the 1850's. Hope this helps some one!

Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Quaker Monthly Meeting In /Around Knox Co. Tn.

Listers I need your help !!!! I have just discovered that my Brown and

Wood families

have quaker connections in Randolph Co. NC

prior to coming to Knox Co. Tn. ( ~ 1800-!820)

Where would they have attended Monthly Meetings when they arrived here

??? They all

seem to be clustered in the Halls-Powell area so far, but as far as I

know the closest Friends meeting was in Blount Co. ( FRIENDSVILLE)

Surely there was one closer ....and one or more in Knox Co.!!! Can

anyone help me out here ??

Also does anyone have connections to the

Joseph and Sarah McClain Wood family ???

They arrivedin Knox Co. from Randolph Co. NC

BEFORE 1805 as that was when Sarah Wood

Brown was born in Tn. Am interested in finding

wills and deeds for her father Joseph s/o

Zebedee. Think she might have inherited the

property that she and John N. Brown lived on

on Copper Ridge from her parents. Any and all

leads will be deeply appreciated!!!

Terri Brown Jurca

BILLY PLEASE POST THIS ON THE LST FOR ME !!! IT HAS BEEN SO LONG I HAVE

HAD A LAPSE OF MEMORY AND DONT KNOW HOW TO POST DIRECT !!!! THANKS
