My name's PJ Summers and I live in Washington state, researching my family of BROWNs in Knoxville, Knox Co. My gggrandfather was Thomas Lee BROWN, b 8 Oct 1819 or 1820 near Knoxville. His parents were listed in old history texts and obit as Thomas Lee BROWN, b abt 1795, place unk, and Mary CUNNYGIM or CUNNYGUM (could also be CUNNINGHAM). Thomas Lee, the son, married Drucilla CARSON, from Cocke Co, in 1840 and they are shown there on census and tax lists until a birth of daughter Martha puts them in Knoxville in 1847, and then in 1850 in Chattanooga. In 1860 these BROWNs moved to Kansas. I am assuming there were other related families who may well have remained in the Knoxville/Knox County area. I'm just moving into this area of BROWN research, so have yet to begin checking for records to verify dates and look for other links and clues. Just wanted to throw this out to you all, in case we may have a connection or a mutual interest. Some surnames are Hutchison, Turner, Taylor, Warwick, Grindstaff, Johnson, Oaks, Sharp, Graves, McClain. Does anyone have an Isaac Hutchison (b. abt 1821 in Tennessee, d. after 1870 probably in Knox Co.) or Elzira Amanda McClain (b. abt 1850) in any of your lines? Thanks Diane ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 11:35:30 EDT From: RandyPel@aol.com Subject: [KnoxCoTN] (no subject) Hello: I joined several months ago. I grew up in Knox County, attended Rule High School, and worked for the Knoxville Journal. I now live in Savannah, Georgia. My relatives and ancestors are mainly from Knox County. Their surnames are Lones (also spelled Lonas), Cavett (also spelled Cavitt), Gilson, Turner, McClellan, Gray, Sterling, Boley, Roehl, Case, and Peltier. Joseph Lones and Nancy Cavett Lones are buried in Mars Hill Cemetery; other family members are buried in Concord Masonic Cemetery and the Henry Lonas Cemetery on Filmore Street in Westview. I am particularly interested in confirming that Alexander Cavitt, Moses Cavett, Richard Cavett, and Henry Lonas were soldiers in the Revolutionary War. If anyone has any information that will help me on this issue, or any other information on the above mentioned families, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. The East Tennessee Historical Society (ETHS) is sponsoring the long-awaited sequel to the popular PBS series, Ancestors, on East Tennessee's PBS stations, WSJK and WKOP. The series will air 11:30 a.m. on Saturday mornings from July 22 through October 14 on WSJK-TV (Channel 2) and WKOP-TV (Channel 15) in the Knoxville/East Tennessee area. The Ancestors series looks at how records such as census, probate, vital, military and immigration, can provide important information about our ancestors' lives. It shows viewers how and where to find these records and how to use them. Ancestors follows the personal stories of individuals whose search has led them to a discovery of their heritage and a greater understanding of themselves. In addition to the television series, ETHS will be co-sponsoring a series of informative genealogy sessions throughout the East Tennessee community during the show's run. The sessions will vary in content with volunteers from ETHS and the LDS Church providing instruction on topics such as computer genealogy, British Isles, land records, genealogy for children, and other topics. Dates, times, and locations for the sessions will be posted on the ETHS web site at www.east-tennessee-history.org The web site will be updated with a current schedule on Monday, July 24.
