A friend of mine who forwarded this to me confirmed with the VA Medical

Center that this is legitimate. The man's party is Sunday, the 17th. So,

time's a-wastin'!

==========================================================

I received a message from the Community Relations Resource Center at the

Biloxi, VA Medical Center, Biloxi, MS about a disabled veteran's upcoming

birthday.

What's so special about a disabled veteran having a brithday?

Normally, it just goes to prove the theory that the disabled veteran is

still entitled to his earned compensation from the Veterans Affairs.

But in this case, he is a very special disabled veteran, as on

September 20th, 2000, he will celebrate his One Hundred Twelveth. Yep, you

seen those numbers correct. . . 112, that's a one followed by a one and a

two (also called a twelve)!

I was just thinking how great it would be if everyone would take a

moment and send this long surviving veteran a special birthday card to

brighten his day.

So, how 'bout everyone sending a birthday card to:

John Painter

c/o Administration Service136BC

Alvin C. York Medical Center

3400 Lebanon Pike

Murfreesboro, TN 37129

. . . AND, how bout sending this on to your family and friends so they can

join in the celebration.

Hi List,

I have just finished another volumne of Funeral Home Records for the

Knoxville Area and will have a search database on-line by the middle of

October. This book is for the Carl R Roberts Funeral Home 1914 - 1919 and

contains over 2,000 listings. It is available for purchase by writng me at

1425 Glenoaks Drive, Knoxville TN 37918 at a cost of $12.00 including

shipping and handling. A database for the Hall & Donahue Funeral Home should

be available around the first of October.

Also I have decided to take a two week vacation away from my computer from

Saturday September 16 through Monday October 2. I will not be reading or

answering e-mail during this time and will stay off the computers as much as

possible, (They have consumed my life lately).

Thanks to all of you!

Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Is this Corryton School?

I've uploaded a picture that I'm trying to identify. It might be Corryton

School around 1910-1920.

Please take a look and see if you can help us figure it out. Feel free to

pass this along to anyone who might be able to help.

Our Robert McGinnis and Mrs. Ruby Zachary Coram, the Corryton historian,

identified the possible Corryton school photo. Not only that, Mrs. Coram

has graciously agreed to give us some history of the school and a list of

all the people in the photo -- except for nine who are unidentified!

My grandfather, Paul Clapp, was born in 1909, and raised in Corryton on

Washington Pike Road. He died in an accident when my mother was 12.

Would he have gone to this Corryton School? What high school would he

have attended?

Paula,

Yes your Grandfather would have probably attended Corryton Elementary

School, both at the one in the picture and at the present school building on

Corryton Road. The building in use now was built in 1922. The Clapp family is

very old in this section. If he went on to High School he would have most

likely attended Gibbs High which still serves the community today.

Please plan to go hear our Robert McGinnis in a friendly debate with Jack

Neely, the author of Knoxville history pieces for Metropulse magazine and a

couple of books. The debate will be downtown. I hope Robert will post

details when they're available.

Sadly, I won't be able to be there! I'm planning to attend the first-ever

get-together of Ramey researchers that day. <pout>

Subject: [KnoxCoTN] schools in Corryton

Thank you, Barbara, Billie, Robert and the other person who answered me

(I don't have your name). My mother looked through her things last

night and found a 1911 textbook that belonged to my Uncle Clyde (who

died at age 92 this past May in Corryton) with GHS written in it, so he

and my grandfather must have gone to Gibbs High School.

She does remember that her family lived in Knoxville two times, around

1939 and 1950. In 1939, her father was a teacher at Gibbs High School,

and she thinks also the basketball coach, although he was only about

5'5" tall. And in 1950 he was the principal at Mascot School.

The doctors did not realize my grandmother was pregnant with twins in

1939, and kept restricting her diet so she wouldn't gain much weight.

As a result my mother only weighed 4 pounds at birth, and then caught

pnuemonia at 6 weeks. She was the first person given sulfa in Knox

County - the doctor had to have it brought in and took it to her at

home. (He said no use taking her to the hospital - she could live or

die at home.)

I have sent her and my aunt the picture of Corryton School to see if my

grandfather or great uncle are in it.

Thanks again for all the help.

Paula
