knoxcotn-digest Monday, January 31 2000 Volume 01 : Number 053
---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2000 20:44:24 -0800 From: "Lian Thomas" <kycumberland@hotmail.com> (by way of "Billie R. McNamara" <knox@tngenweb.org>) Subject: Re: [KnoxCoTN] 30 Jan 2000 Sunday Afternoon Rockin' Well put, Jan! I started my first web page with the information my grandfather had left from his nearly 30 years of research, but Grand Daddy did not know to cite his sources and eventhough he knew the old timers in the family (many lived to be 100 or more yrs.) and I'm sure his facts are probably accurate, I posted it to the net initially without a disclaimer. This was wrong, as not too long afterwards, I received information from a woman advising me that one of our offshoots could not have married a given person based on legal documents she had found. Now, I was in a quandry. To believe my grandfather's aunt, who was named for the woman in question and knew her personally or to rely on this person's documentation? I chose to put a disclaimer on the lead page of my website advising people that as with anything on the internet, verify your own sources. If it was posted today that Bill and Hillary divorced, should we take that as fact without checking it out? Hardly. One more bit of advice for us newbies, as you are surfing the net and come across an interesting bit of information, be sure to click on the homepage of that person. Perhaps there was a disclaimer posted there or their source for the information or even links to other folks with pertinent information. As to the HTML...I haven't learned it yet, but am the County Coordinator for Cumberland County, KY. Thank Goodness for the Idiot's Guide to HTML and for the HTML Writer's Guild!!<g> I try to keep a database of information I receive on folks in my county and their lineage, but again, try to make sure that folks know that I have no control over the accuracy of such a database. You must have PROOF in order to join DAR and other such groups. A name list will not cut it. Lian
It is simply to forewarn our new folks, simply to (hopefully) undo a little damage that may be done and make it more likely that our brick walls will truly be resolved someday...that our new folks who come into our genealogical communities on the net on a daily basis find us--and are not missiled first by one who may well have thrown yet ANOTHER brick wall up in the path on their own mission to status as the "family gatekeeper". Have a good day...and as always, just a thought, jan ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Jan 2000 02:24:23 -0800 From: "Billie R. I'm not endorsing the site, but I don't want to hold back something that might be potentially the hidden jewel for anyone, either!!! Betty Evans Webb ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Jan 2000 22:58:59 -0500 From: Laura Cowan Cooper <dacooper@usit.net> Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Householder Family I am trying to sort out the Householder Family that lived at one time in the Lonsdale area of Knoxville. The ones that I am working on at present are the group that in 1939 "had seven surviving children whose ages total 642 years." More of them of them lived to be 90+ years old than died before 70. Many of the men worked for the railroad and retired from Southern Railway. Several of the children were Methodist Ministers and then there are doctors and lawyers. In 1943, William Marcum Householder was Tennessee's oldest Mason and observed the date he became a Master Mason. I know that this family was tied into the Lewis Family also.
