The nearly 600-page book, Standard History of Knoxville..., edited by noted

journalist William S. Rule and published in 1900, is being transcribed for

the Knox County TNGenWeb site. The first installment, "Transportation," is

complete.

Please visit http://www.knoxcotn.org/history/rule/

Rule's history includes a lot of regional, and even interstate, historical

information.

We are adding lots of material to the Knox County site almost daily -- come

visit us often!

Have the Knox Co. TN tax lists been published in book form yet?

If so, does anyone here have access to the book? I'm interested

in the period from 1792 to 1822.

Also, have Knox Co. TN will abstracts or at least an index been

published?

I have Greene Co. and Blount Co. books and would be willing to

do lookups in exchange for help.

Hi, Vickie! Some have, but many haven't. Some were done in book form, and

some were done in the publications of the East Tennessee Historical Society

and other organizations. You won't find a complete list of tax records for

Knox County from the early years. As a matter of fact, a handful of lists

from the mid-1850's has just recently been uncovered.

Thanks for sharing the lookup offer!

Hi Imogene,

I'm not related but my gg-grandfather, James Liles, is listed close to a

Major W. Wilkerson on the 1850 Roane County Census. Both are buried at

Hickory Creek Cemetery, in West Knox Co. Is this your Major Wilkerson?

Sandy

My Knox County lines came to the county from Claiborne, Grainger & Union in

the late 1800's and early 1900's. Would love to hear from any HOPSON, we are

clearly kin. My earliest known in this line are Harrod HOPSON and wife Sarah

BUNCH who came to East Tennessee about 1800.

My brick wall is Martha "Patsy" Wells, b. about 1824, married James Hopson in

Claiborne Co on Oct 24, 1844. They are my great great grandparents. I believe

that I have proved that this Martha doesn't belong to any of the Wells

families who were in Claiborne from 1830 on. She may have come from Lee Co

VA, or, although only 20 when she married James, she may have been married

before, in which case Wells would have been her first married name.

Some transcripts of the Claiborne Co Marriage records call her Wills or even

Mills. I've looked at the original record and I do believe that it's Wells,

just bad handwriting and ink blots. My great grandfather's death certificate,

evidenced by my grandfather, says his mother was Martha Wells. P G Fulkerson,

early historian of Claiborne County, says that James Hopson's wife was Patsy

Wells, but unlike some of his accounts he doesn't name her parents. This may

mean she was not a 'local'.
