Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Caswell Station; downtown Knoxville fire

Something caused Pat's message to bounce -- please respond directly to Pat

if you have answers.

My thoughts -- I don't find "Caswell" station in my "bibles" (Ramsey's

Annals and French Broad-Holston Country). Caswell was the name of

Jefferson County under the State of Franklin's administration. We had

Cavet's Station, but it was a little more than 3 miles from Knoxville --

there was a horrible massacre there in 1793.

The "Million Dollar Fire" in Knoxville was in 1897. It gutted much of

downtown. We will have photos from it on-line soon. We also have some

photos of many of the buildings PRE-fire.

Subject: Knoxville Info?

To: KnoxCoTN@rootsquest.com

Hi all and Billie,

I have a couple of questions that I wonder if someone can answer for me?

In the 1870s there was a Caswel or Casuel Station, located abt. 3 miles from

Knoxville, possibly on or near the river. Anyone ever heard of it or know

where it was exactly? I was raised in Knoxville, but it is a new one for me.

Secondly, sometime in the 1870s there was reportly a big fire that burned

quite a bit of Knoxville. I take it must have been the downtown part. Does

any know anything about it and what year it happened.

Thanks,

Pat Ross

I am glad to know my memory isn't too far gone. I too, dated the big fire

about that time. But there must have been another one too. I just received a

pkg of old letters and in one the lady wrote: "Oh, yes, our town got an fire

las night and had like to burnt up the town. I do not know how many bildings

was burnt but it burnt pretty near all night. Could not stop it. It is a

grate loss to our town."(sic)

Now, this lady married in 1868 and moved back to Knoxville then, so this fire

had to have happened 1868-1873. From the writings, it sounds like she had not

been married too very long. I am guessing maybe a couple of years. The letter

is dated March 10, but no year.....

Thanks,

Pat

Just in case anyone can use the info: I found it!

CASWELL, which I am told, was later called Caswell Park. It is located over

behind the old Sears building, near the Boys Club, which is abt. 3 miles from

the court house. Caswell Street runs from north Broadway to Southern Railway.

Thanks,

Pat

Thanks, Pat! That's something about Knoxville I didn't know <vbg>....and

something not in my "bibles." I hope Miss Deaderick and Dr. Ramsey hear me

wagging my finger. But, where they are, they aren't concerned about

earthly things <wink>.

I am trying to locate CHRISTOPHER C. THOMAS, b. Oct 1833, VA. He is my =

gg grandfather. I don't know much more about him. I have him in the =

1900 Sharp County, Arkansas census, living in the home of his son John =

Christopher listed as a widower and census indicates his wife born in =

TN. He homesteaded land in Sharp Co, AR in 1899. I have no death =

record. They have been very difficult to track.

Also in the home in 1900 census with J.W. Thomas family in 1880 was a =

Thomas P. Fowler (b. Dec 1844, TN, VA,VA )

I could not locate Christopher C. or John W. in the 1870 and 1880 census =

for Sharp County, AR.=20

Therefore, since his son was born 1864, TN, and his wife is to have been =

Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Thomas Family of Knox Co., TN

Hello,

Hello. I am one of your newest subscribers. I just joined.

I am looking for my gf, Christopher C. Thomas, b. 1833, VA., his wife (b.

TN), and family. One of his children was John Wesley Thomas, b. 1864, TN,

who is my mom's grandfather.

I had hoped to find them in Knox Co. Census, but could only find 1850 census

index on-line. They could be in 1850-60-70 census'.

Do you know anyone who would be willing to do lookup's?? Thanks.

PS: Nice site; I really like your search engine.
