That's better than what happened to one of my possible ancestors in the

1700's in MD. I say possible because she had the same name in the same

county and the Bastardy conviction was about 15-20 years before the child

that I am descended from was born. I'm still awaiting the delivery of some

court records to see if it was indeed her.

Sarah Garner, in Charles Co. MD in 1761-62 was sold into servitude for 7

years for her bastardy and her child was sold to someone else until he

reached the age of 31 (if he ever did).

Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Watch your incoming file attachments!

I just got another copy of the PrettyPark.exe virus. This came through

Rootsquest's server, so I'm guessing it got sent out to one of the two

lists I manage there.

We all know not to send file attachments to the lists. But, this is

happening without the knowledge of any individual -- the virus sends

itself out without your being aware.

Please DO NOT open any attachments that have PrettyPark.exe as the file

name. If you have your e-mail program set to automatically open any

attachments that come to you, change that immediately.

This virus won't hurt your computer, but it's a real pain in the posterior.

If you're not sure whether you have the virus file on your computer, you've

got a couple of ways to look for it. Note that these instructions won't

work for a Mac or other operating system -- but, then, the virus won't work

on your computer anyway!

1. Windoze 95/98 users:

Click Start

Click Find

Click Files/Folders

Type in Name Field: pretty*.exe

Click on Look in: Make sure it shows the ROOT-level of the drive where

your mail program

puts attachments (Usually C:).

Make sure Include Subfolders is checked.

Click Find Now.

If nothing comes up in the lower window pane, you have nothing to worry

about. If you get a

program called Pretty Park.exe, right click on it ONE TIME ONLY to

highlight it. If you don't get

a delete option in a pop-up menu, press the DELETE key on your keyboard

(above the

4 navigational arrows, to the right of Enter).

2. DOS junkies (like me <g>)

Go to an MS-DOS prompt. At the prompt, type this:

CD \

(that's a backward slash mark -- probably between your backspace and enter

keys)

Hit Enter

Type this at the C:\> prompt dir pretty*.exe /s

That's a forward slash before the s. Note where the spaces are.

Hit Enter

Give your computer time to respond. If it comes back and says you have

file(s) like this:

pretty~1.exe 60,928 Date Time Pretty Park.exe

then you need to delete the file(s) immediately.

After you delete virus-infected files, it's always a good idea to empty

your recycle bin (if you're using a Windoze 95/98 machine).
