Robert McGinnis has shared the burials, history, photographs, and records

transcriptions related to the small (but very important) Bearden cemetery

in West Knoxville. I saw some surnames that will excite many of you....

http://www.knoxcotn.org/cemeteries/bearden/

Also, Marjorie Turk has shared some of her cemetery transcriptions with us:

http://www.knoxcotn.org/cemeteries/mturk.html

We've got lots more to go, but we think you'll agree it's definitely worth

the wait!

From cuzzin Laura Keyes Perry:

For the next 10 days, Jordan R. Dodd's "Early American Marriages: Tennessee,

1851 to 1900." Orem, UT: Ancestry, Inc., 1999-2000 can be searched free at

http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/inddbs/4125.htm

I am not sure whether it covers all TN counties, but I got results from Union

and Roane and Grainger.

Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Your wishes can come true...

Your Knox County TNGenWeb hostesses are OVERWHELMED to announce that Robert

McGinnis, the Knox County Cemetery Historian, has agreed to make

transcriptions of more than 450,000 Knox County tombstone inscriptions

available exclusively through the Knox County TNGenWeb site!!! Proceeds

from the sale of Robert's transcriptions benefit the James White Fort

Association -- JWF is a living history-style recreation of the first

settlement in the present city of Knoxville.

The entire Cemeteries section of the Knox County TNGenWeb site has been

revamped with new information and hints of much more to come. For

instance, soon you'll be able to search a database of Knox County burials

to help you identify which of Robert's transcriptions you need to obtain.

What makes Robert's transcriptions so wonderful? He's probably the

most-knowledgeable person about Knox County's history and residents during

the past 220 or so years. His transcriptions don't just contain the data

that was on the tombstones. Robert has spent 25 years poring through

church records, funeral home records, death certificates, obituaries,

wills, deeds, and family Bibles to enhance the transcribed data.

Keep in mind that thousands of people left the outlying counties and moved

to Knoxville for business or employment opportunities. You might be

surprised to find out who's buried in this county!

We know you're chomping at the bit to come visit our new section, so here's

the URL:

http://www.knoxcotn.org/cemeteries/

See you soon! Now -- be sure to spread the word via personal and list

mail to anyone you think would be interested.

From another list:

From Jack Brissee, Chair, FGS/NGS Records Preservation and Access

Committee:

Subject: re: Cost of Military Records Going Up (NARA Statement)

There have been postings on a number of mail lists recently about an

increase in the fees the National Archives and Records Administration

(NARA) charges for copies of compiled military service records and

pension records. While NARA is considering a change to the fee structure

for these documents, the information that has been posted is both

premature and somewhat inaccurate. The Records Preservation and Access

Committee, a joint endeavor of the Federation of Genealogical Societies

and the National Genealogical Society, has contacted NARA officials for

clarification. The following is the "official NARA statement" issued in

response to our inquiry:

- -Begin NARA Statement: The National Archives and Records Administration

(NARA) will be issuing a proposed rule within the next few weeks that

will revise fees for reproduction, including the "fixed-fee" orders in

the NATF 80 series. The proposed rule will have a 60-day public comment

period, during which time we will actively seek the comments of the

user community.

The proposed rule is presently undergoing internal government review.

When it is released for publication in the Federal Register, NARA will

notify the national genealogical organizations and post a copy of the

proposed rule on its web site. The message will include the exact URL

and the address for sending comments. -End NARA Statement-

The Records Preservation and Access Committee will continue to monitor

this proposal, and will post relevant information on the Records

Preservation and Access pages of the Federation of Genealogical

Societies' Web site (http:www.fgs.org) when it is available.

Please feel free to forward this posting to other mail lists on which

the original posting may have appeared.

Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Correction to Knox County military pension recipients

I uploaded an incorrect page for the military links in Knox County last

night. I've fixed that -- sorry for any confusion! The URL again is

For those of you researching Jefferson and Sevier Counties, I've also

transcribed those pensioners and will have the pages up in a few

days....watch for an announcement!

Subject: [KnoxCoTN] What else are we doing?

Someone inspired me to make a list of the projects Rose-Anne and I are

working on for the Knox County TNGenWeb site. I'm sharing it here in case

someone has a hankering to help type or proofread. We aren't glory hogs

<g>....and we can provide document copies for you to work from!

- -- 1876, 1885, and 1891 city directories (with cross-references)

- -- 2 early Knoxville High School annuals

- -- a database of cemetery transcriptions from Robert McGinnis' work

- -- the 600-page Rule's History of Knoxville

- -- a "photo album," of Knoxville scenes from old pictures and postcards

- -- a 1910 or so list of every member of the Odd Fellows and Rebekah

organizations in Knox County

- -- a 175-page history of Knoxville, done by a writer's group in 1982

- -- the 440-page tribute to Knox County's participation in World War I, with

a list of all who served (including a bio and photo of at least half the

soldiers).

- -- a history of Knox County's dairies

- -- a list of famous people from Knox County you may not know were

born/raised here

And that's just the Knox County stuff! Rose-Anne hosts Fayette County's

TNGenWeb site (that's next to Malfuss, for those of you like me who never

venture west of the central time zone line <g>). I have several

independent East Tennessee county sites that I'm working on stuff for --

including an index of all extant Jefferson County newspapers from

1854-1900, and several indices for Sevier County records, among other

things. We're also working on regional and statewide projects --

Rose-Anne's transcribing J. J. Burnett's history of East Tennessee Baptist

preachers, and I'm going to tackle 100 pages or so of handwritten petitions

to the TN legislature in 1817 requesting manumission of slaves.

As I said, we're always happy to have help -- or, if you're working on a

transcription of records, letters, diaries, or whatever that you want to

share, we'd be pleased to work with you to get it "Webicized." Just holler

at one of us!
