Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Park City people in the early 1930's

Yesterday at an auction, I bought the scrapbook of Louise Featherston, who

was a very busy teenager in Park City in 1933-1934. It's got newspaper

clippings and lots of other neat stuff about her friends. This will be of

value to families of the people -- I know most of you have Fountain City

and north Knoxville interests, but I'm hoping someone will have grown up in

Park City or know someone who did...<g>

Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Interesting analysis of the I Love You virus

This came from another list I'm on. If you're not interested in techie

discussions, hit delete now. If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer or

Office 2000 components, or if you're interested in what makes this thing

tick, keep on reading:

::I got "hit" by the ILOVEYOU virus -- well, I didn't actually

::execute it. Since I don't use Outlook, I thought I was

::immune. Well, not exactly. You see, by some "strange

::factor", my computer (Windows 2000) has the ability to

::execute VBScripts, even though I did not explicitly enable

::it to do so. I suppose it's because of Internet Explorer,

::and Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, deemed it necessary

::to default their super-massive security holes to the "on"

::position. I will eventually deal with that annoyance.

::

::BTW, Bill Gates will be the first up against the wall when

::the Revolution comes!

::

::So be careful -- even if you aren't using Outlook for your

::mail, if you have any of the microsoft products installed --

::Office 2000 or IE5 -- you are probably enabled to execute

::this script. Even though it will not propagate, it will

::still modify your registry and overwrite your .gif, .mp3,

::..jpg files and modify others.

::

::I spent a little time dissecting the code. 300 lines of VB

::Script. I've never looked at VB Script before, but couldn't

::tell little difference between it and Visual Basic (which I

::integrated into a credit card management system for First

::Data some years ago).

::

::Also, this code is simple enough to allow even the most

::inexperienced of programmers to modify and create new

::strains. So, I suggest you disable VBScripting from your

::systems now. Why oh why didn't Microsoft simply go along

::with JavaScript, which does not have these whopping security

::problems? Not that JavaScript is totally secure, but at

::least you have to work very hard to exploit some minor hole

::-- if any remains -- to limited effect. Netscape and Sun

::have both been diligent in plugging security holes in

::JavaScript and Java, respectively. Bill Gates, on the other

::hand, thinks that you "don't need no stinkin' security."

::

::TANK, MSFT, TANK! :-)

::

::BTW, I've got this code splayed on my dissecting table,

::deactivated, of course. If anyone wishes to take a look at

::it, let me know privately. The guy who wrote it is a so-so

::programmer. It did not require a lot of skill. And I fear

::copy-cat versions are going to be legion. This code would

::qualify for "life" in my book. Can self-replicate, and even

::be mutated by the owner of its hosts!
