---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 16 May 2000 05:57:32 -0700 From: "Billie R. McNamara" <knox@tngenweb.org> Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Copy services in downtown Knoxville If you're planning to attend the ETHS Southeastern Genealogy workshop in Knoxville in <gulp> 10 days or so, you will probably want to have an idea of where to get good, cheap, quick copies made in case you hit the motherlode of information. I want to give you my personal recommendation for the best copy shop in the downtown area -- within two blocks of the Hilton and East TN Historical Center. It's the Downtown Copy Center on Church Street, about 1/2 block west of Gay Street. They pick up and deliver free. The prices are competitive, and the service is outstanding. You can't beat their quality and attention to detail. They're open 8-8 M-F, but they'll arrange to be open later or on Saturday for conference registrants if necessary. Kinko's about a mile away (Cumberland Avenue/UT Campus) is open 24 hours and does free pickup-delivery, but they're in a "rebuilding season" (my description). The DCC's prices and quality far exceed Kinko's. Unless it's 3 a.m. and you're dying for copies (I wouldn't be out downtown at that hour anyway <g>), I'd wait till the DCC opens up. And, if you don't have a clue what conference I'm talking about, go to www.east-tennessee-history.org and get yourself registered! <g> ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 May 2000 23:44:46 -0700 From: "Billie R. McNamara" <knox@tngenweb.org> Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Mailing list members' get-together at ETHS We need to get a rough idea of how many of you are planning to attend our mailing list get-together at the ETHS workshop. If you've already sent in your "RSVP," you don't need to repeat it. If you haven't, we'd appreciate it by Monday, May 22. We need to order the wine and the cheese tray (Robert nixed my koolaid and pretzels idea <g>). As of now, we're looking at an "open house" sort of thing from approximately 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 26 -- probably in the room where I'll be lecturing from 4 to 5. The last lectures of the day end at 4:55. Supper where George Schweitzer is the keynote speaker is at 7. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 May 2000 23:41:00 -0700 From: "Billie R. McNamara" <knox@tngenweb.org> Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Walking "Ghost" Tour of Knoxville Our own Knox County Cemeteries Historian and local expert, Robert McGinnis, has offered to lead a walking tour of the "downtown plateau" -- places within no more than 4 blocks of the Hilton Hotel and East TN Historical Center -- on Friday night, May 26, as part of the ETHS Genealogy Conference weekend. We thought it would be fun to have him carry a lantern and lead people around on the "ghost" tour -- some of Knoxville's more interesting tales, to be sure. The tour would take about 45 minutes. You don't have to be a conference registrant to take part. We're trying to see if there is enough interest to even offer the tour. So, if you think you might be, please let me know by Friday, May 19. We're looking forward to having y'all here! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 May 2000 05:56:34 -0500 From: "Rose-Anne Cunningham Bray" <knoxcotn@wdbj.net> Subject: [KnoxCoTN] FW: genealogy This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - ------=_NextPart_000_0002_01BFC08D.D30C8CC0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Good morning, y'all! Can't remember if I forwarded this on or not, thought others might find it useful. Babe in FL I received this from a friend, and at the risk of insulting the intelligence of those of you who already know this, I thought I would forward it to all my genealogy cousins. I hope it proves helpful. Abby Omans Lutz What Do Those Initials Mean? Initials after your ancestor's names may provide useful information that you'd not expected. The following list includes initials you may come across when reading old wills or other documents. a.a.s. died in the year of his/her age (anno aetitis suae) (86 y/o died in year 86) d.s.p. died without issue (decessit sine prole legitima) d.s.p.l. died without legitimate issue (decessit sine prole mascula supesita) d.s.p.m.s. died without surviving male issue (decessit sine prole mascula supersita) d.s.p.s died without surviving issue (decessit sine prole supersita) d.unm died unmarried d.v.p. died in the lifetime of his father (decessit vita patris) d.v.m. died in the lifetime of his mother (decessit vita matris) Et al and others (et alia) Inst present month (instans) Liber book or volume Nepos grandson Nunc Nuncapative will, an oral will, written by a witness Ob he/she died (obit) Relict widow or widower (relicta/relictus) Sic so or thus, exact copy as written Testes witnesses Utl late (ultimo) Ux or vs wife (uxor) Viz namely (videlicet)
