---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 24 May 2000 20:55:53 -0700 From: BlueLaker4@aol.com (by way of "Billie R. McNamara" <knox@tngenweb.org>) Subject: Re: [KnoxCoTN] Jump-starting list discussions As far as a topic of discussion goes, I'd love to hear some of the colloquialisms from the south. I've heard some before, but have completely forgotten them, but they usually go something like this: He was as (fill in the blank) as a (fill in the blank) in (fill in the blank)." Perhaps: He was a nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs." And if anyone has some really great ones, I'd also love to know how they came about, if you know. What does everyone think about this subject? Jackie Ginn ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 May 2000 21:01:28 -0700 From: "Billie R. McNamara" <knox@tngenweb.org> Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Storm damage I hope everyone who lives near Knox County survived the storms yesterday (and what appears to be coming tonight -- we got tornado watch notices on TV). If you're coming for the conference, don't worry -- so far downtown and the remote sites are okay...a few leaves and small limbs on the ground, and a couple of feet of water for a while near downtown. Actually, most of downtown Knoxville is on a good-sized hill, so it would take a MAJOR storm to flood the streets (yep, I do remember a few before First and Second Creeks were re-routed)... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 May 2000 23:32:59 EDT From: DG2COWS@aol.com Subject: [KnoxCoTN] History of Fountain City A supplement in todays Knoxville News-Sentinel has an article which mentions that "History of Fountain City" by Nannie Lee Hicks has been reprinted. The Fountain City Town Hall has reprinted a millenium (fourth) edition which is a 100 plus page book which will sell for $10.00. It will be available at the annual Honor Fountain City Day held on Memorial Day at the Fountain City Park. The article does not give any information on ordering the book. Perhaps someone in Fountain City can furnish some info on this? Gladys ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 May 2000 05:58:48 -0700 From: "Billie R. McNamara" <knox@tngenweb.org> Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Driving to Knoxville today? If you're driving to Knoxville today for the ETHS Southeastern Genealogy conference, please be extremely careful. We're in the midst of some nasty weather (right now we're having a slight lull at my house), and it's expected to do some kind of precipitation throughout the day. We've got a severe thunderstorm watch and flooding potential until at least 10 a.m. Nashville and the plateau are getting it worse -- they even had tornados overnight -- so PLEASE be careful if you're driving on I-40 from the west. Be sure to pack rain gear, and especially "duck" shoes -- we're to have rain off-and-on all weekend, according to this morning's weather. There's another round of this ugly stuff making its way across Arkansas right now, so it will be here tonight or early tomorrow -- but hopefully it will lose some steam. I hope you'll brave the weather and walk the block from the Hilton to the East Tennessee Historical Center, where you'll find a host of vendors and the McClung Historical Collection open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 each day. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 May 2000 06:13:00 -0700 From: "Billie R. McNamara" <knox@tngenweb.org> Subject: Re: [KnoxCoTN] History of Fountain City Hi, Gladys! Our own listmember, Dr. Jim Tumblin, is on the committee. The book is available by mail from the committee, and I know Dr. Jim is planning to post a notice here. I'll have sneak preview copies at my vendor table at the East Tennessee Historical Center at this weekend's conference.... WBIR-TV / Channel 10, the most-popular TV station in Knoxville and within a 60-mile radius, has gone on-line at www.wbir.com Why do we genealogists care? The Heartland Series, of course! http://www.wbir.com/Heartland/ They have plans to put the entire series' catalogue on-line so you will be able to identify episodes that relate to your research and order the videotapes. This morning's piece, "The Paradox of Dr. Thomas Walker," was particularly interesting. Here's the description: "In 1750 Dr. Thomas Walker crosses Cumberland Gap. He is 19 years ahead of Daniel Boone. He records a journey of momentous discovery, yet he remains a footnote to history." Heartland tapes are available at a variety of book and gift shops in East Tennessee. Channel 10 hopes to sell them from its website in the future. They are incredibly informative and make outstanding gifts <blatant hint>. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 May 2000 09:15:12 -0700 From: "Billie R.
