Subject: [KnoxCoTN] France issues certificate for US WWII vets

One of my husband's proudest moments on our grand tour of Europe a few

years ago was walking through the Arch de Triomphe 50 years after his

father had made the same march following the liberation of

France. Recently, the French government began honoring those American

soldiers who participated in the liberation through a certificate

program. Imagine what a wonderful gift you can give to US WWII veterans of

the French salients in your family.

Please note this important caveat: "The decision to honor World War II

combattants applies only to living veterans who served on French territory

and in French territorial waters and airspace in 1944-1945. The certificate

will not be awarded posthumously."

Subject: [KnoxCoTN] A tiny bit of typing needed...

We're almost ready to unveil the Knox County World War I history and database.

But....

We have about 2000 names that need to be typed so they can be incorporated

into the database.

You can either use a spreadsheet program or a word processor.

You don't have to type fast -- just be neurotic about accuracy. After all,

we want people to be able to find grampaw in the database, right?

Depending on how fast you type, it will take anywhere from 4 to 20 hours to

complete the whole list. Of course, we'd love to have multiple volunteers

split it up.

So -- if you're up for it, please contact me. I'll send you the pages and

instructions.

Appalachian Life Magazine has recognized the popularity of genealogy...

http://appalachianlife.com/forum/

It's not limited to Tennessee, but the magazine is published in Greeneville...

There's a Walker query there <g>.

I don't have a financial interest in the magazine -- just passing along a

resource.

I am looking for information regarding my great-

grandparents, Samuel & Barbara WALT. They

came to Knoxville from Switzerland about 1850

with two of their children: John, b. 10 Sep 1848

and Rachel b. date unknown. Barbara (my grand-

mother), was born in Knoxville 10 Mar 1859.

Samuel was an abittor (meat butcher) and was in

the Civil War. This family was in the 1850 and=20

1860 Knox County Census. What happened to

them after the Civil War? I could not find them

in the 1870 census.

Would appreciate any information. Thanks in

advance.
