---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 29 Apr 2001 21:44:13 -0400 From: "Billie R. McNamara" <knox@tngenweb.org> Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Why I am nosey in libraries... When I'm in the library, I always read over others' shoulders to see if anyone else is working on one of my lines, and I listen when they say what names they're researching. You never know... Yesterday, I had a couple of hours to kill, so I went to the library in Rogersville (Hawkins County). I almost didn't sign the book -- I was in a snit because they have new rules that are overkill. (In case you're wondering, I couldn't leave a personal copy of a map on a table outside their locked genealogy room -- had to turn it in at the desk. I didn't want to carry the durned thing in the locked room, but I wanted it handy to refer to. Nope, no way.) Anyway, when I was about to get ready to leave, a woman walked in and asked, "Which of you is Billie McNamara?" I kinda looked up, but I didn't know from her tone if it was slink under the table time or stand up and wave time <g>. I said, "Me." Turns out she was a distant cousin who'd just e-mailed me the first time a couple of days earlier. Now -- I hadn't planned on being in Rogersville that day. And, she had never been there in her life. She got up yesterday morning and decided it was the day. Got chills yet? Just wait... I spent the afternoon at the McClung Collection today. I worked feverishly in the microfilm room, collecting all the Acuff deeds before 1900. I overheard a lady in the corner say she was working on Burnetts. So, I put a distant cousin's name and phone number on a piece of paper and carried it to the lady. I said, "She knows more about Burnetts in this area than anyone I know." The lady thanked me and said, "Mine went to Marion County." I said, "Oh! So did hers." When the lady told me her line, I nearly fell over... I grinned real big and said, "Well, not only are we kin, but there's a whole table full of my...er, our...cousins sitting out there in the other room who are dying to meet you, but we didn't know you existed!" Until today, the lady didn't know her ancestor's maternal line... Are y'all tingling yet? I reckon some of that "good genealogy karma" I've been racking up is starting to pay off...now if they'll just turn up that will that the minute book says was entered for probate 150 years ago, but wasn't copied in the book, I'll be a-right smart overwhelmed. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 May 2001 16:01:14 -0400 From: Betty B Osborne <betty@ellijay.com> Subject: [KnoxCoTN] book wanted I would like to buy a new or used copy of "The French Broad Holston Country, A History of Knox County TN" by Mary Rothrock.
