Subject: [KnoxCoTN] More on the Ellis Island database situation

From the JewishGen mailing list:

I have been informed, by one of the 'volunteers' in Utah who

worked on taking data from FHL's microfilms and entering

it into the EIDB, that 95% of the extant records were included

and that the remainder were essentially impossible to read.

According to her, the government destroyed the original paper

docs after microfilming and there no longer remains any backup

for the unreadable films.

Additionally, the entire project was a joint effort between FHL

and the National Parks Service, with the labor supplied by the

FHL, but the decisions as to what the programming should include

(Soundex, for one) remaining with the NPS.

If this is, in fact, the case, then FHL has done all that can be expected

of them and any enhancements to the EIDB would seem to have to

come from the EI administrators in conjunction with the NPS.

So *all* 3-5 of my family arrivals misspelled the same name or were

on the 5% of unreadable microfilms? What a coincidence!

Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Just got my first W32.BadTrans.13312@mm hit

I thank God for Norton Antivirus every day. Today I got the first attack

from an unsuspecting soul whose computer has been infected with the

"BadTrans" virus. It came from someone who's a subscriber to a mailing

list I posted to. So, it's making the rounds of the genealogy world.

Here's the Norton scoop on it:

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.badtrans.13312@mm.html

If you have a resident virus-scanning program installed and keep it updated

religiously, you can hit delete now. If not, please read the next paragraphs.

Forgive me for probably seeming a little snotty, but there is ABSOLUTELY NO

REASON for anyone to be on-line without virus scanning software installed

and maintained with current definitions. You're not only placing your own

system at risk, you're spreading the viruses to others. To me, there's no

difference in getting on-line without a virus scanner and coughing some

highly contagious germs onto your hands and then wiping your hands on the

rims of everyone's drink cups at a party.

I know, it's gross. But, you've got to realize how serious this is. How

will you feel if all your data gets trashed because someone sends you a

virus? Then how will you feel when you discover that you've helped (albeit

inadvertently) to trash someone else's data?

If those who aren't running a virus scanner PROPERLY would start doing it,

we could wipe out most of the virus infections that just seem to refuse to

die -- like the "Haha" one.

I'm getting off my soapbox now -- but I hope you'll do something to wipe

this one out before it can become the pain in the butt that the "Haha" virus is.

Billie, I agree wholeheartedly.

My not-so-old Norton's Virus service with Symantec ran out recently. I called

to re-new. They told me that I needed the new software that is out instead of

renewing using my other software because my other Norton's software would not

be able to handle the newer, more sophisticated viruses.

So last night I installed the latest Norton's Virus software program that I

could find on the media store shelf. It didn't cost a lot more than my one

year subscription would have and the program carries it's own one year

subscription to Symantec.

My point is, even if you do have a virus scan program, you probably need to

update to newer software if yours is more than a couple of years old. It took

about half an hour for the Life-Update to send all the new anti-virus

protection to my pc that my old software had not had the capability to do.

Be Safe...Marjorie
