A very good article about this outstanding resource is at

http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/columns/eastman/3894.asp

I have been accumulating a box of photos from my grandfather's tenure in

the Army to send to the Archives -- the ones that are of buddies, or scenes

of men performing various functions, for example. My grandparents were

HUGE picture-takers, and I've inherited them all. The ones that are

identifiably my grandfather we're keeping, of course. But, he's been gone

nearly 50 years, and the pictures of a man standing watch over Pancho

Villa's camp, for example, will have more value to a historian than they do

to my family. Likewise, I've got a ton of "exchange" portraits of men he

served with. I have no way to contact their families, but hopefully

they'll think to check the Archives for a picture of great-grampaw someday.

Just a suggestion...

A cuzzin recently made this observation about the apparent lack of logic

involved in the 19th Century westward migration and the apparent illiteracy

of many of our Tennessee ancestors:

"They put up signs all around Tennessee that said, 'Come to Texas.' Those

that could read, did."

Just had to share it...<g>

Appalachian Flyers: The amazing stories of East Tennessee's forgotten air

pioneers.

A year or so ago, I planted a seed in Knoxville author Jack Neely's brain

about a man named John Crozier. Mr. Crozier, one of the subjects of the

latest feature article by Mr. Neely, has been very nearly haunting me for a

few years. Now his story's been told! And, if you want to know about the

"Battle of Thorn Hill" feud that Mr. Neely writes about, holler. I've got

an essay about it -- based on the memories of Herbert Jones -- that I'll be

happy to share.

Subject: Re: [KnoxCoTN] Lookup needed

There's an index for the Dawson book at the Sons of the Revolution office

on the second floor of the ET Historical Ctr (where McClung is on the 3rd

floor). I've got a copy, but it's harder than the devil to find people

without an index.

You need to move over to Dumplin -- where Jefferson, Sevier, and Knox

Counties come together -- to find the rest of the Cate kin.

Subject: [KnoxCoTN] New Books, from Knox County Cemeteries

Hi List,

I have just finished the latest and final volume in the family cemeteries

of Knox County. Volume IV covers the Northwest section of Knox County from

I-40 West to I-75 North and includes cemeteries in the communities of Hardin

Valley, Solway, Karns, Powell, Third Creek, Ball Camp & Piney Grove. Along

with family cemeteries the larger community cemeteries of Bell's Campground,

Bookwalter, & Glenwood are also included. The book has 261 pages and is

indexed with color photo's, wills and deeds. The Volume IV by itself is $25

plus $4 S & H. For those interested in a complete set the price is $104

including S & H. Also at the same time I have finished a separate

transcription of Bell's Campground which includes several obituaries not

found in the Volume IV copy. This book was done at the request of the

Campground and will be available at their Decoration Day services (Today).

The cost for just Bell's Campground is $16 plus $3 S & H. All of these books

and others which I have done will be available at the Cousins Picnic in

Powell June 16 & 17 and hopely I will have finished New Gray by then. I will

be taking the summer off from Books, in order to update and copy, but will be

starting the Church Cemetery Books in the fall. Maybe by the end of 2004,

Knox County will be all typed and published and then I can move on to

censuses and other projects ( If I live that long ).

Thanks for all of your interests in Knox County Cemeteries and see most of

you at the Cousins Picnic,

Robert McGinnis
