---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 27 May 2001 20:14:13 -0400 From: "Billie R. McNamara" <knox@tngenweb.org> Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Fwd: Irish records change pending Greetings from the Genealogical Society of Ireland http://welcome.to/GenealogyIreland A Chairde, There are only Four Days left for receipt of submissions on the Irish Government's proposals for the modernisation of the Civil Registration system in Ireland, therefore, if you are really interested in Irish genealogy and genealogical research in Ireland you *must* take time out to read the proposals for the modernisation of the General Register Office in Dublin. The document "Bringing Civil Registration into the 21st Century" is available on the web at http://www.groireland.ie Your views are sought by the compilers of this proposal and indeed, there are circa 45 different questions on the service in this proposal. These proposals include a major shift from records of Births, Marriages and Deaths being "public records" as they are at present to become "personal records of individuals held by a public body". Also, a new distinction between "historic" and "current" records is envisaged with accessibility to such information requiring "authentication" by the user. A suggested closure period is also envisaged to protect privacy etc. Different levels of access to these records is proposed - what does this mean for genealogists and those engaged in commercial genealogical research? All this to stop the misuse of the information through the fraudulent use of Certificates - the compilers of the GRO document maintain. Your views on the domument are important. In the meantime, you may like to read the main article in the May 2001 issue of the GSI's monthly newsletter "The Genie Gazette" on-line at http://welcome.to/GenealogyIreland Also, you may like to checkout the GSI's "Regional & North/South Proposal on the Records of the General Register Office, Dublin" which is posted on the Society's Website http://welcome.to/GenealogyIreland This document is very important to the future accessibility of BMD records in Ireland. Submissions must be received by 31st May 2001. Submissions are also welcome by e-mail on grodoc@welfare.ie - please don't miss this opportunity to have your say on the GRO. Thanks & kindest regards, Michael Merrigan Hon. McNamara" <knox@tngenweb.org> Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Time to say "Hey" Once again, we've got several new people on the list. So, I think it would be nice if we all wrote a quick introduction. You never know whom is lurking out there with all your family history, or is an old classmate. I'll start... Rose-Anne Cunningham and I are the Webmistresses for the Knox County TNGenWeb site. We've both been sidetracked over the past few months by unexpected "real-life" requirements, but we've got some pretty big things planned for the site in the future. This list is an extension of that site. We do love donations of transcribed material, and we do our best to get them on-line quickly -- with full credit and copyright going to the transcriber, of course. Rose-Anne lives on a small farm in Mississippi with her husband and critters, but she's a Tennessee native (albeit that furrin section out **West** <g>). You can visit the house they're building (themselves!) on her website at http://www.wdbj.net/. Rose-Anne's an outstanding nurse who's returned to ICU duty after teaching nursing at a Kentucky university and working as administrator of a hospital in Memphis. She's an outstanding genealogist and loves solving mysteries. Her deepest research is in the "Land Between the Lakes" region of Western Kentucky, just over the TN border, and in Fayette Co., TN. You can check out Rose-Anne's surnames on her website, also -- I keep telling her she's gonna get a bunch of them right smack-dab back here into East Tennessee, cuz they're way too familiar around here. I'm a Knoxville native who lost her mind several years ago and spent about 10 years living away from here. I'm a little nervous because when Sir Spouse finishes his master's degree this fall, we'll probably have to leave my beloved mountains. The only places I've ever seen that rival the Smokies are the lowlands of Scotland, the southern mountains of Wales, and a corner of Western Pennsylvania. I grew up in the Alice Bell and Sunnyview communities of Knox County, but I graduated from high school in Jefferson City. I attended Carson-Newman in the 1970's, but graduated from UT (ran out of money <g>). My mama grew up in Smithwood, then graduated from Central High and Knoxville General Hospital School of Nursing. I've got my surnames listed at http://www.tnhillbillie.net/surnames.htm -- oops! Just noticed I do have some to add as a result of recent research. So...now it's your turn! Crippen" <stpauls@csicable.net> Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Information My name is Donald (Don) Crippen originally from the Halls Crossroads area. My grandfather (Elmer Crippen) owned Crippen's Produce. I have only been working on our genealogy for less than a year, but have gathered much information - thanks to great people willing to share their information and experiences. Some of the names included in our line are: Crippen, Rouser, Major, Shipe, Hall, O'Dell. I moved to Huntsville, AL while in the 5th grade (around 1955) and remained there till graduating from high school. I then joined the U.S. Air Force and served in Turkey, Viet Nam, and North Dakota (three overseas assignments!!) from 1964-68. I married a North Dakota girl in 1969, went to college in Minot, ND, seminary in Kansas City, MO, and was ordained a United Methodist minister in 1976. I pastored in North Dakota from 1976-80. In 1980 I entered the U. S. Army as a chaplain and remained there till 2000 when I retired. I served in the 82nd. Airborne Division, two tours in Italy and one in Germany as well as Ft. Knox, KY. The Army sent me to graduate school and I received a M.Ed from Vanderbilt and then spent 5 years on the faculty of the U. S. Army Chaplain Center and School. After retirement from the Army I was appointed to St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Jamestown, North Dakota. I also miss TN - we had a home in Clarksville and my two daughters still live there. However, North Dakota is a great place to live as well (especially in the summer!!). Any information you my have on the Crippen family will be greatly appreciated.
