My husband (William S.) and I were both born in Knoxville and graduated in 1948 from Old Knoxville High School. I have my father (Carter Caloway Bayless) traced all the way back to the first Bayless to arrive in America, John Bayless, in the 1600's. Bill and I returned to Knoxville in 1979 after 27 years away, traveling the world in the U.S. Army, then 7 yrs. in Greenville, SC. My brick wall is trying to determine if Hugh Bayless Cox (1902-1959) is Bill's birth father whom he never knew. All records of his father, marriage, divorce, City Directory, all have Hugh B. Cox, never a middle name. According to Bill's birth certificate, his dad was born in 1902 also. In Hugh Bayless Cox's obituary no mention is made of Bill, but it mentions a son Kyle in the Navy in Amarillo, TX. Even though I have Hugh B. Cox's social security number, I couldn't find him in the death index. I can find no marriage records in Knox County for Hugh Bayless Cox and his last wife, Anna Mae Rector, even though they both are in the City Directory before and after their marriage, so have been unable to find anything with his signature to compare with Hugh B. Cox. As I said, a brick wall. If anyone knows anything about these people, I would appreciate your help. I did find Hugh Bayless Cox's family in the 1920 census (they lived in Jefferson County), and Hugh was 18 at the time. His mother was Emma Bayless, but I haven't found her name in any of my father's ancestry; however, we may be distant cousins, no? Thanks. I am reserching the lines. Damewood, Moore, Knowles, Reynolds, Stephens, Proffitt, Bullard. John H Damewood was born in Knox county TN around 1822. I do not know for sure who his father was. He married Lucinda Moore in Dubois county IN March 29, 1849. They had a son TJ, Issac and Mary Dorinda. Lucinda and John divorced (not sure when) John , TJ and Isaac show up on the 1870 Wilson county Kansas census. Later we hear John moved to Cowley county Kansas. Lucinda turned up in Wilson county (Fredonia) at some point with Mary Dorinda. If anyone knows of this line please contact me. Thank you so much. I am very interested in genealogy and years ago took a course at the University of Tennessee that Billie McNamara taught. My mother was a DEADERICK and my father was a LOVEDAY. I have ties to many of the people in East Tennessee which include the above and also CROZIERS, ANDERSONS, ETHERTONS, CONNATSERS, AND WHITEHEADS just to name a few. I am interested in sharing information with anyone who has interest in my ancestors. I am also greatly interested in the DEADERICK'S that settled in Nashville and Memphis. - --part1_d3.157e4e35.2846b124_boundary Content-Type: text/html; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
My name is Ellen Hadaway and I live in Maryville, Tennessee and have lived
here all my life in East Tennessee. Great list. I am a third generation great grandson of David and Sarah (TILLMAN) GIBBS (married in Knox County on May 4, 1797). David is the son of Nicholas and Mary (EFLAND) GIBBS. Surnames that get my attention on this list (other than the 3 listed above) are PICKARD, SHARP, GRAVES, COBLE and DRYDEN ...all immediate or once removed ancestors of the names above. I traded my baseball card collecting hobby (4 million plus cards) for the role of family historian about 5 years ago...thinking I would take all my uncle's books, letters, pictures, etc and simply put them in FTM files so the content wouldn't get lost...then the addiction hit! So far, over 62,000 names in the e-files. But, when you are on the road 4 to 5 nights a week, it sure beats watching television. I was born and raised in Kansas...raised by a mother who loved to talk family history...she is a former president of the Midwestern Region of the DAR. My current home base is Boca Raton, Florida where I have lived for the past 6 years....18 years in Atlanta before that. Of Knox County, Tennessee interest, I have put those weeks on the road to good use. The names, dates, locations and many stories contained in the book, "Nicholas Gibbs and His Descendants: 1733 - 1977" are now in my FTM files (est. 20,000 names....many of which have been mentioned during the current roll call). Several corrections to the book and many many additions have been made to the book's content since it was published back in the 70s....but many more to go! I will be attending the GIBBS reunion in Corryton on Saturday, June 23 of this year...with digital camera and computer in hand. My objective is to take as many relevant pictures of the homestead as possible and to update as many names as I can. We (the Nicholas Gibbs Historical Society) hope to launch a website for Nicholas' descendants by the end of the year. Hope to see as many cousins there as possible...so get the word out! This should be a great link to the Knox County home pages. My grandparents George and Lula Wheeler moved here in 1924 from Knox Co. Both their families were long, long time Knox residents and some still live there. The names I am researching are Wheeler, Conner, Bayless And Scrivner. Some associated names are Wood, Norman and Anderson. The Bayless & Conners were instrumental in the building of Glenwood Baptist church. Much info is available from that source. Any one researching any of these names I would love to hear from. - --part1_3a.15c32746.2846c5bb_boundary Content-Type: text/html; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
My name is Pam and I live in Cincinnati Ohio.
