I am searching for information on two of my mother's aunts: Mary Ollie

Craig, born Sept. 24, 1884 and died February 28, 1903 and her husband, Dr.

John Gammon, born August, 1904. Dr. Gammon may still be living, but I'm not

sure. Mary Ollie is my Grand Aunt and one of two people in my mom's family

that I have absolutely no information to include in my Family Tree. My mom

said that they lived in Knoxville, so I'm hoping someone will know something

about them.

The other Grand Aunt is Joan Craig (known as Aunt Jo) and her husband H.

Frank Faust. I have absolutely no children listed for them, but Aunt Jo was

born Dec. 01, 1886 and died August 31, 1970.

Thank you so very much. Nina

I don't know if this is the same Dr. Gammon, but my Aunt worked for Dr. =

J. H. Gammon from shortly after 1941 until the early 60's (Loudon =

Co/Knox County area). I believe he delivered my brother and he may have =

delivered me. I'll ask my mom. I had mentioned to my cousin that his =

mother had help with the delivery of my brother and possibly me and he =

asked her about it. He said that in "addition to being a medical =

doctor, he was also a member of the State Senate. He was also a school =

teacher for Grandma Sherwood "across the river (Clinch River) at Gravel =

Hill".

Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Note from Dr. Jim

For some reason, Jim Tumblin's message bounced... So, here it is!

>From: J. C. Tumblin <sleepy6@icx.net>

>Dear Nina (and the KnoxCoTN members):

>

>

>The book "Medical Men and Institutions of Knox County, Tenneseee=

> (1789-1957)", edited by S.J. Pratt and M.L. Ogden (1969), has this=

> biography of Dr. Gammon:

>

>

>"John Henry Gammon (1878-1960)-Born in Anderson County near Clinton, Dr.=

> Gammon taught school for thirteen years before he decided to become a=

> physician. He graduated from Lincoln Memorial University Medical=

> Department* in 1912. Dr. Gammon was inspired to practice medicine by=

> working as a youngster for an eye, ear, nose and throat doctor for forty=

> cents a day. His job was to awaken his employer at night when the doctor's=

> services were needed. He first practiced in Fountain City** for a short=

> time and then went to a coal mining section of Anderson County for some=

> years, finally settling in Knoxville about 1940. In 1925 Dr. Gammon became=

> a registered pharmacist. Later he received his law degree from the John R.=

> Neal College of Law*** in Knoxville in 1932. He was deeply interested in=

> education and served on the Knox County School Board for many years, and=

> before that for two years in Anderson County. Dr. Gammon served four terms=

> in the Tennessee Legislature in 1926, 1948, 1953, and 1959. In April,=

> 1953, he represented Tennessee at the first Western Hemisphere Conference=

> of the World Medical Association in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Gammon died=

> April 17, 1960, and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery."

>

>

>You will find other Gammon biography in the Tennessee Blue Book=

> (legislators) and his obituary would no doubt be in the Knoxville=

> News-Sentinel or Knoxville Journal a day or so after his death in 1960.

>

>

>*LMU-MedSchool, which no longer exists, was probably in Knoxville at the=

> time.

>

>**Fountain City is a suburb, 5 miles North of Knoxville. I practiced=

> optometry there from 1948-1996 but did not know Dr. Gammon, as he had moved=

> his practice to Knoxville by 1948.

>

>***John R. Neal was a Knoxville attorney whose law school trained some of=

> the most prominent Knoxville Lawyers, usually in a form of night school, as=

> I remember. It is stated that no one who ever graduated from his law=

> school ever failed the State Bar Exam. He became a very rich man following=

> his participation in the Scopes "Monkey Trial" and as an attorney in the=

> long-lasting suits over environmental devastation in the copper mining=

> district of Copperhill, Tennessee.

>P.S. To his credit it is apparent that Dr. Gammon was a strong believer

>As long as you are green, you will grow; when you think you are ripe, you

>may be rotten.
