I received this note from a friend today...

DO NOT OPEN "NEW PICTURES OF FAMILY" =20

=20

It is a virus that will erase your whole "C" drive. It will come to =20

you in the form of an E-Mail =20

from a familiar person. =20

=20

I repeat =20

a friend sent it to me, but called and warned me before I =20

opened it. He was not so lucky and now he can't even start his computer! =20

=20

Forward this to everyone in your address book. I would rather receive =20

this 25 times than not at all. =20

=20

If you receive an email called "FAMILY PICTURES," do not open it. =20

=20

Delete it right away!. =20

=20

This virus removes all dynamic link libraries (.dll files) =20

from your computer and they are critical to the operations of =20

Windows 95/98/Me. =20

I have just learned that the virus message I sent out is a hoax. It is not true. I received it from my brother-in-law, I should have known better. Sorry for the scare.

There is a good place to check out possible computer virus hoaxes (and other

email spread hoaxes) at www.snopes.com under Inboxer Rebellion - it is a

site that deals with Urban Legends. Checking there first can save spreading

misguided information. I have found it very useful. Barbara Brown Brinkley

Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Putting on my stern mother hat...

In the past 3 days, I've gotten about 20 messages from people whose

computers are infected with either the @mm or the new Sircam viruses.

The problem is, you don't know you've got the virus until someone tells

you. Your computer sends out messages on its own. The new one sends out

documents from your "My Documents" folder...isn't it scary to think your

personal files might be flying around the Internet?

If you haven't installed Norton, McAfee, Central Point, Dr. Solomon's, or

one of the full-blown virus scanners by now, you're playing Russian

roulette with your computer and others' computers. But, it doesn't stop

there. The virus definitions are seriously outdated when you install the

program. So, you have to go through the steps of updating your definitions

no less than every 14 days. If you're on a cable modem, set it to update

every day because you can.

Then, set your virus scanner to scan your e-mail as it comes in. If your

program won't do that, uninstall it and go buy Norton Antivirus. It does

scan incoming mail.

No virus scanner works with AOL to scan incoming mail, however. So, AOL

users need to run the virus scan manually on your Downloads directory each

time you get new messages. Otherwise, you could have a ticking bomb in there.

If you've got your e-mail program set to open the next message

automatically when you finish reading one, stop that. If you've got it set

to execute attachments as soon as you open the message, stop that. Get the

most up-to-date version of your program, so you won't have bugs or security

holes.

If you need help, call your ISP's helpdesk.

If you're one of the people who think having your mail download slowed down

by a virus scanner is just too much trouble to deal with so you turn it

off, then you don't need to be on-line anyway. You're only going to hurt

others, even though you'd probably never dream of doing it intentionally.

Sorry to rant like this, but I believe getting on-line without up-to-date

virus protection is like having unprotected sex with a stranger.

Back to fun now: genealogy, family reunions, canning beans, and cooking

down apple butter...
