Hamilton & Self, Phipps, Wells Families
Barry Self -- Sunday, 2 April 2000, at 4:42 a.m.
I am looking for two people and their descendants particularly. The first is Lilly (Lillie) Self Hamilton, who married William Hamilton in 1898 in Monroe County, Tn. They divorced and she took their children and moved to Knox. County, TN. She was the daughter to Amos N. Self and Margaret ?. Lilly had at least these children: Elizabeth, Leslie, Mary, Alfred, Clarence, John D., Cilcilia and Cynthia Ellen Hamilton. She nor her ex-husband ever re-married I have been told. Lilly and her children are all supposedly buried in and around Knoxville, Knox. County. William Hamilton was the son to Alfred & Cynthia Dye Hamilton of Monroe County. The other person is believed to be a sister to Lilly. She is Callie Self, married to Herbert Phipps and Edward B. Wells. She lived mostly in the Knoxville area. May have moved to Memphis in the 1920's. Her sons, William McKinley and Harrison Glen were believed born in Knoxville 1900-1905. Any info. will be appreciated.

You might check the Peter Varner line. Peter was born in Knox Co. in about 1816 and is my 2nd great uncle. Knox Co. researchers tell me that the Peter Varner descendents still live in Knox. It is worth a look. Some of the records can be found in the Knox Co. Cemetery on line listings. I am told that there is a will associated with these Varner listings. Good Luck

Family legend has it that my ancestor, Absolom Warrington Gillespie, was the son of Thomas Gillespie and that Absolom was born c. 1802-4 near Maryville, TN. He is said to have been the youngest of many children and that he ran away from his apprenticeship as a tailor. He had previously run away to fight the Indians in Florida but was sent back at the request of his father because he was underage for the army. I have been unable to find anything that positively connects him to any TN Gillespies. It is said that his mother was Hannah Polk (which may be an error--he had a daughter by that name) and that he had a sister named Susannah. Any info re this man? Thanks!

I am looking for surnames: GARRISON, LAIRD, DUKE, JOHNSON, PITTMAN, FARMER, JORDAN and HAEGLE. All born in the time period 1785 to 1822. They are purported to have come variously from the Virginias, the Carolinas, Ohio and Indiana through Tennessee and Kentucky and then to Illinois. In particular Martin PITTMAN b. c. 1785 in NC, was father of Joseph PITTMAN, b. 1845 in Knoxville, TN. Martin PITTMAN's wife was Achsah FARMER b. c.1810 in TN. Achsah's father was Dew FARMER. Achsah's mother was from a Huguenot line. The GARRISONs, LAIRDs,& DUKEs were said to be Scots-Irish, and the JOHNSONs were Penn Dutch. So far as we can tell, many of the families migrated as groups, following the opening of land. The JORDANs were said to be descended from Samuel, b. 1578 in Wiltshire, England. The HAEGLEs were from Virginia. Any information would be appreciated.

I am trying to establish definitely that Abraham had a son James or Jesse James born in 1796. Jesse was in Tazewell Co., VA in 1820 census su he must have moved back, since that is where the family came to TN from.
Would like to trade info with anyone who has info on this famly. Also, Jesse married Rebecca ? I think her name was Whitt but need to confirm it. Do not know if they married in Tennessee or VA.

Looking for information on the family of Marion Bell (B Aug 1854) and his wife Hester A Mynatt (B Apr 1845). They are listed in the 1880 Knox Co census with a daughter, Mary (age 2) and in the 1900 Knox Co census with no children. Hester evidently died between 1900 and 1910 since Marion remarried.
Any info on the parents of Hester A Mynatt would be greatly appreciated as well as any info on her daughter, Mary, and on any other children they may have had.
Thank you.
