Has anyone researched the HILL families in Knox Co TN? We're looking for the husband of Elizabeth HILL, shown on the 1850 Census of Knox Co TN. It lists Elizabeth HILL 35, with Eliza Ann 13, William A. 11, John H. 8, Richard E. 5, James H. 4, and Robert E. 2, family # 1434 on pg. 387. Elizabeth and Eliza were born in TN. The family next appears on the 1860 Census in Williamson Co IL. A look at the 1840 Knox Co TN Census shows an Albert HILL family for which the ages almost fit (K-43 20001-10001), but this is a guess based on knowing that the oldest son's name is William Albert. Any help greatly appreciated, this has been searched for by a cousin since the 1940's! Relatively new indexes pointed us to Knox Co TN and the first breakthrough was finding Elizabeth and the children there last week.

They both lived in Knoxville for many years. He taught school in addition to buying and selling real estate. Claiborne died in 1901 at Knoxville of Scarlet fever. Mary, years later, moved to Arkansas to live with her son, my grandfather. At this point, the location of marriage is the mystery. I'm not certain now that they were married in Knox County.

I have checked what marriage records I have available for Knox county, but no mention of this couple.

My gggrandfather, Crawford FISK (b. abt. 1838, father's name possibly James FISK), married Martha ALLRED who was from Alabama (b. abt. 1832, dau of William ALLRED, b.1806 in Knox Co., TN, m. Elizabeth BROWN in Blount Co. AL in 1829; Elizabeth was born in 1814). They moved to Marion (now Baxter) County, AR before the Civil War and Crawford was listed as living in the home of William ALLRED in the 1860 census. Martha had a sister named Carey Ann who was living with Martha and Crawford during the war. Crawford was killed by jayhawkers in his dooryard before his pregnant wife's eyes while home on leave from Mitchell's 14th Arkansas Confederate Army Infantry Regiment to get in winter firewood for his wife shortly before my ggrandfather, James C. FISK, was born on March 30, 1865. Carey Ann ALLRED ran to the neighbors to get help. According to family tradition, Crawford FISK's older brother was Jim FISK of the Jay GOULD/Jim FISK Wall Street gold scandals in New York in the 1870's and 1880's. Would be happy to correspond with you if this info rings a bell. Thanks in advance for your help.

I am wondering if the William BROWN you show listed as the son of William BROWN who died in 1807 might be my William.

Steve: I am researching John Petree (Petre) listed in 1840 census of Knox Co. listed as 40-50 yrs old. On the next pg of census are listed William Petree and John Petree, both married, 1 child each and their ages are listed 20-30. John's wife is listed as 40-50 yrs old, also. Would you possibly know the elder John's wife's first name? Or when the elder John died? I've located Wm and his family in 1850 with a 55 yr old Elizabeth Petree living next door. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Surname: PETREE

HI, Part of the problem is that earlier in Grainger Co. and Sullivan Co. there are and still are Petree's(also soundex spelling)Only part of the sons of 2-3 brothers have been found. Our line of John George Petree went to Campbell Co. but by 2 generations were back in the Knoxville area and are today. Known petrey\ee from that early 1800, took about 2 generations to have some end up in Knox Co. but as i said not all the children of John Adam Petre\ry\ee of Sullivan Co. have been found. Adam is listed in Speedwell's and his daughters married the BEELERS, names like John and William were very common in the early 1800's but more then likely you could look back at Sullivan Co. for Adam Petree's children and find your John etc.

Jim Rice -- Sunday, 22 August 1999, at 12:25 a.m.

My great aunt, Jane Rice, married Andrew Haun/Hawn/Hon in Knox Co., TN in February of 1849. The were enumerated in Knox Co. in 1850, but by 1860, they were in Blount Co., ALABAMA, having gone there with Jane's father and clan. They established a community (never incorporated) still known to locals as Ricetown. There is a still active Ricetown Chapel Cemetery in the community, and the tombstone inscriptions for people buried there up through about 1971 can be seen at the following URL:

http://members.aol.com/GenWebLisa/blountcocems.htm

One of the tombstones is for Jennie Rice Hawn. I don't know what happened to her husband, Andrew. He may have died in the War, since he is in the 1860 census but not the 1870 one.

That's the sum total of my Haun/Hawn/Hon information, other than to say that I've noted in passing several Haun/Hawn listings in the TN census records as far back as 1830.

Best Regards, Jim Rice (jrice@arches.uga.edu)

Cherokee Ancestry of Trula Shimpaugh
Amanda Mattox -- Saturday, 28 August 1999, at 4:35 p.m.

Looking for any information on Trula Shimpaugh, she was born and died in Knoxville, Tennessee. Was reportedly full blood Cherokee. Dates unknown at this time, but she probably lived between 1900 and 1950's. She married another reportedly full blood Cherokee named John Hankins. He may have been from Oklahoma, where he was adopted and aquired the name Hankins. They had a son, named Bobby Edward Hankins, he also lived in Knoxville, Tennessee. Any information on this famiy would be most appreciated.

Hello, I have a great great grandfather named William Alexander Hill born in Tennesse 1860. He married Fannie Parrott in 1888 in Knoxville and had my great grandmother Genevieve Hill in Knoxville Tennesse in 1889 and her sister Irene Hill in 1894. All are on the the 1900 Knox County Census. I have no information any farther back. I was not even aware they were Genevieves parents as she had lied to my family. I recently sent for her death certificate and my cousin had a copy of the census. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

I guess I should mention I know my William Hill's middle inital is A. I found the Name Alexander on a marriage record list that the LDS had on the net. They had 2 listings for the date of their marriage with several inaccuracies. They seemed to be the same couple, but the years were different and the middle names were dfferent on them both. I'm guessing that A. stood for Alexander, but not certain. I haven't sent off for his birth or death certificates yet.

I'm wondering if your Elihu Brown is related to my John Brown. John was b.1799 NC married in Knox Co. Tn 1825 to Sarah Wood. The name William Brown is on some papers at John's estate sale. Do you have any info that might connect them? Thanks, C Key

I sent you some bio on John Brown by email, hope you got it. Looking at this message reminds me that my Elihu Brown who married Jane Brockus in 1822 in Knox Co, but who father, we believe, is William Brockus lived in Grainger Co., Tenn. Even though the family lived in Grainger, it appears most of them were married in Knox Co.

My Elihu Brown and Jane moved to Putnam Co., Ind about after 1823 perhaps not until 1828. We are still loooking for the Brown family that he belongs to, but I notice from this query the name Fraker. Have you ever heard of a Barney Fraker. Kay

Kay Van De Rostyne -- Tuesday, 31 August 1999, at 3:21 p.m.

I am very interested in the Claiborn Brown. My Elihu Brown married in Knox Co.Tenn Jane Brockus from Grainger Co. The marriage bond was signed by Guyan Brown, who we believe to be Gideon Leeper Brown, son of Felix Canada (I believe he was named after Felix Canady (Kennedy)) Brown b. 1760-1770, and grandson of William Brown b? c1830 d. Knox Co. 1807. Elihu Brown name one of his sons Claiborn Brown. Elihu and family moved to Putnam Co., Ind before 1830. There are two Claiborne Brown marriages in Jefferson Co.Tn between 1800. William Brown Sr and some of Kennedy's moved from South Carolina to Tenn about 1780, they were living around Lancaster Co. South Carolina, orginally from August Co. Va. Perhaps there is some connection. Kay
