Herb Perry -- Monday, 1 January 2001, at 9:06 a.m.

Hi, and Happy New Year, Goodspeed History of Newton Co.,Ark states that Robert Washington Harrison, Atty at Law was born Sept. 26, 1810 in TN and his mother Elizabeth Roberts Harrison of Knox Co., Tn was living with him in 1840 (apprx) and that he was from the family of President Harrison. I know he married Clarinda Austin in Maury Co. TN in the 1830's but haven't been able to trace him back. Any facts or educated guesses would be appreciated. Re: MORGAN
Brigitte Gray -- Friday, 5 January 2001, at 10:51 a.m.

I wish I you tell you more, but there was a Morgan who was the President of the University of Tennesee during the 1900's. He was the grandfather of my mother-in-law, Nancy Gray. I wish I had paid more attention when she was telling her stories, and I once saw a newspaper clipping from the UT newspaper on his biography. If I remember right he was an immigrant from Canada. Nancy Morgan Gray has a brother by the name of Jack Morgan. Maybe this will help you along a bit with your research!! I am not very good at this yet, and have not been able conqueor the task of getting any information on the Morgan family. The Morgan name is being kept alive in the Gray Family, as my husbands name is Morgan Gray, and we he named our son Scott Morgan Gray. Hope this article, if you can find it, will help you in your search!!

I assume what you mean is that you are trying to prove Philadelphia was an Inman, rather than trying to prove that Benjamin Harrison married a woman named Philadelphia. The latter is already proved. --Carl

Re: Lutrell family name
Dottie Millen -- Wednesday, 10 January 2001, at 11:15 a.m.

Be sure to read the book Hitchhiking Along the Holston River by Mayme Parrott Wood.

There are many pictures of the Lutrell family and home and friends and quite a bit of interesting chapters. The book tells of the struggle Strawberry Plains went through during the Civil War. Very interesting book with lots of names of people and school teachers and classes with names even during the wwI and II and Korea, etc. Names of the people living there.

You can get the book by writing to the Strawberry Plains Library.

Lutrell property bounded the Newman properties in the l800s and their names are on many of the deeds.

Knox 1860 census??
Pam Haithcock -- Wednesday, 10 January 2001, at 2:17 p.m.

Would anyone have access to the 1860 Knox co. Census? I have tried getting through inter-library loan, but I can't. I am looking for the information contained under John Bandy--District. 12 and Thomas McWane in District 1. I would be so very grateful.

EDWARD DANIEL MOORE and SARAH LOUVENA MOORE
Fredrick Thomas South -- Wednesday, 10 January 2001, at 4:54 p.m.

SARAH LOUVENA MOORE is my great grandmother and her brother is EDWARD DANIEL MOORE. Their mother is JENNIE MOORE.
EDWARD DANIEL MOORE was born November 28, 1875 in Abingdon, Washington Co, VA, and died June 04, 1956 in Knoxville, Tennessee. He married OLIVENE MAE (MAY) MOORE 1900 in Washington Co, VA, daughter of JOSEPH JR. and SALLY MCGLOCKLIN. She was born May 17, 1882 in Washington Co, VA, and died December 01, 1941 in Knoxville, Tennessee.

From Jack Cross, data on Ed Moore:
He was raised by grandparents Allen & Mary (Martin) Moore. Ed moved to Knoxville, TN in mid-life. He was a Coal Miner and worked in Mines around Red Ash, VA. He lived there for a period of time with his family(Olivene May Moore, Mary Elizabeth Moore Cross, Ida Bell Moore Sproles, Virginia Moore Leonard, May Moore, Jack Moore, A.G. Moore, and George Marshall Moore).
Popaw as he was called by the family was also an itinerant photographer taking pictures in and around Knoxville, Bristol, and Appalachia Va. [most probably going to these areas as at the time that was where his daughters lived). After Olivene Mae Moore died 1 Dec 1941, it was then that he spent much of his time on his photography.
Jack Cross, Jr is still in possession of many of his original negatives, some being glass and smoked glass plate negatives, as well as photographs. He has pictures of "Popaw" Edward Moore and his children.

Data I have found on Ed Moore:
At the Abingdon Courthouse I copied the Marriage License of Edward Moore and Olliene (Olivene) Moore. The license was issued in Washington County, VA on 23 July, 1900. The marriage was performed in Washington County on 25 July, 1900. Age of Husband was 24 and age of wife was 18. Names of husband's parents are Henry & Jennie Moore. Names of wife's parents are Joseph & Sallie Moore. Occupation of husband was farmer. Marriage was performed by P.H. Gwins, a minister of the Presbyterian Church at the house of the Brides parents.

I am looking for info on Ed's and Venie's parents and grandparents.

I would like to correspond and share information about the Andrew Hall, Hansard and Lammie families.

John and Henry Minge families
Jackie MacKenzie -- Thursday, 11 January 2001, at 2:00 p.m.

Wishing to contact others researching these two families. Henry came to Knox Co. from VA around 1826/27. John came later. Henry married Rachel Husong and John married Malinda ? in Knox Co. Henry later moved to Knox Co. KY in the 1850's but returned to Knox Co. TN where he died in 1870. John died after 1887, probably in Knox Co. TN.

Cox Family
Anna Lee Cox -- Thursday, 11 January 2001, at 5:22 p.m.

Would like to find someone who knew or knew of Hugh Bayless Cox, who was born 1902 in Jefferson County but lived most of his adult life in Knox County. From Knoxville City Directories I found the following information: He was married to Leona (last name unk.) from c. 1922 to 1926, no children, and married Anna Mae Rector c. 1935. Anna Mae died in 1958 and Hugh in 1959, both buried in Bookwalter Cemetery. They were members of North Fifth Ave. Baptist Church, no longer in existence. I even found and talked to one of the pallbearers at Hugh's funeral, but he was only 15 at the time and did not know him, just a fellow church member.
Anna Mae had a son from her previous marriage (Lloyd G. Rector, deceased). Hugh's obituary listed a son, Kyle, but have had no luck in locating him. I believe this is the Hugh B. Cox who married Mabel Smith in 1928, divorced in 1930. If so, he is my husband's birth father whom he never knew (William Smith Cox, born 12-21-28). However, after months of searching, I cannot absolutely be sure it is Hugh Bayless Cox, because all of the records (marriage, divorce, my husband's birth certificate) only list Hugh B. Cox, omitting that important middle name. I discovered from the census records of Jefferson County 1920 that Hugh Bayless Cox's mother was Emma Bayless. Since I was a Bayless, I am also interested to find out which branch of the Bayless family she was from. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Anna Lee Bayless Cox

I am a descendant of the William McMillen and Mary Doak you mentioned in your query. William moved to Hardeman Co., TN where he died. His
son, Robert Doak McMillen came into Dade County, Missouri. His daughter Mary Angeline McMillen married my g-g-grandfather, James
Thaddeus Cearnal. I do not know if or how these lines connect but
would be interested in exploring the possibility.. Amanda

Amanda was the d/o George Walker D:1822 Knox Co TN and Betsy Wear/Weir. George and Betsy married 1814 Knox Co TN. George was the s/o William Walker and Mary Weir of Rockbridge Co VA and Betsy was the daughter of Abraham Wear/Weir and Isabella ?? also of Rockbridge Co VA. Charles Edwin Hunger -- Friday, 12 January 2001, at 10:15 p.m.

This is my Uncle Earl McMillen's line, I can explain his line and then see if you would have some more information concerning how they connect to William McMillen and Mary Doak. The most I can find in his line is back to a William McMillen born abt. 1755 and died 1817 in Lincoln County, TN. He married to Martha born abt. 1755 and died February 27, 1823 in Lincoln County, TN. Their children were William married Elizabeth Reed, Nancy, Sarah (Sally)married Edmond Chitwood, Thomas married Sara Ragan, Jane married Jonathan Gross, Martha (Patsy) married Gilbert Marshall, Polley married Hugh Pinkston, Andrew, John Doak married Unknown (MY UNCLE'S LINE), James married Unknown, Joseph married Rachel Norris.
John Doak McMillen was born Abt. 1775 in Virginia and died August 21, 1844 in Lincoln County, TN. His Children were Elizabeth married John Nash Parks, Frances married Davison Robertson, Doak married Madeline Davis, Charlotte G. married Alfred W. Hardin, William Brown (MY UNCLE'S LINE)married Julia Moorehead, John married Mary Amelia Dicus, Constant Thomas married Milinda Ann Ishm, Eliza Ann.
William Brown McMillen was born October 23, 1810 in Lincoln County, TN and died in Lincoln County, TN. He and Julia Moorehead had Davison C. McMillen (MY UNCLE'LINE,HIS GRANDFATHER) on September 1, 1837, he died October 25, 1879 in Crawford County, MO. There has to be some connection.

Re: BALLARD AND RELARED FAMILIES OF KNOXVILLE
Donna Vaughn -- Saturday, 13 January 2001, at 9:35 a.m.

I don't know if we are related back 100 years or not. I am searching for my great great grandmother's Cherokee name. She was an Indian squaw. Her "Christian name" was Margarrett Ballard. Her son, my great grandfather was born November 17, 1870 in Blount County. His name was Loranzo Frank Hobbs, Jr. I have been told by relatives that she died young and was buried in Knox County but outside the cemetery. Unfortunately, I don't know where. She died with small children so I'm assuming she died around 1875-1880. I know this is a long shot but I did want to respond. I have just started my search. I went to the Tennessee Archives Library here in Nashville once and plan to go again next week.

Manerva Jane PARSONS/WILSON, HICKEY
Denise May -- Sunday, 14 January 2001, at 4:41 p.m.

I'm still searching for the parents of Manerva Jane PARSONS alias WILSON. She was born 27 July 1824 and married George HICKEY 8 Nov. 1842. She died 29 May 1890. I know that she was married and died in Knox County, but the only record of her birth is from a family bible which only gave the date. There is no record of her parents that anyone researching this line has found so far. Does anyone researching PARSONS or WILSON have any record of Manerva Jane?

Re: Gallion
Nancy Sterling Tyler -- Monday, 15 January 2001, at 9:18 p.m.

I have searched my Gallion records on Synthia or Cynthia Gallion daughter of Thomas Gallion, Jr. and Alvira Deal. I do not have a death date for her but a marriage date of 4 April 1839 to Aaron Cunningham. I also searched through the bible records kept by Synthia's sister (my ancestor) Mary Elvira Gallion who married James Lawson Sterling in Knox County, TN. Someone entered the death of "Thomas Y. Galyon died February the 3, 1900", on the death pages of the Bible, but the other entries are for Sterling surnames.

I don't have a sister listed as Sallie, though it may be the nickname of Hannah, Jane, Elizabeth, Margaret Ann, Rebecca or one that I do not know about. Nor do I have a marriage for one of the sisters of Synthia to Aaron Cunningham. I will send you what information I have on this family in hopes that you may find something that will help you and maybe you can supply me with some additional information as well.

Re: benjamin harrison
bruce harrison -- Thursday, 18 January 2001, at 11:03 a.m.

Carl I Think you are correct. But Philadelphia Imnan is The onley one who come,s close so where do i go from here? THANKS BRUCE GOT ANY ADVICE

Re: benjamin harrison
Carl -- Thursday, 18 January 2001, at 11:48 a.m.

Philadelphia Inman is the only one who comes close to what? There IS a Philadelphia, maiden name unknown, who was the wife of Benjamin Harrison of VA, Jefferson and Cocke Co. TN, and dying ca 1818 in Knox Co. TN. That is proven by the records, and VA records reveal she was his wife before he ever left VA.

Now, do you have some actual record that shows a woman named Philadelphia Inman -- with that maiden name -- every existed anywhere? Not messages, or someone's statements (without evidence) to that effect, but an actual record of some sort?

If you do, and her time frame is compatible with that of Philadelphia, known wife and widow of Benjamin Harrison, then you would attempt to find records showing the two are the same. If you do not, you make a similar foray into the records, but in both cases, keeping an open mind that Philadelphia, known wife and widow of Benjamin Harrison, might have a different maiden name entirely.

If you are unable to uncover a record in TN that makes that link, the first step would be an exhaustive examination of the VA records in the time frame and location where Benjamin and Philadelphia are located near the point of their marriage. They can't marry if they can't meet, and they can't meet unless their families live close to each other.

If Philadelphia IS an Inman, her Inman family MUST have been near Benjamin in VA long enough for a meeting and a marriage -- and even in such a case, the Inmans of Jefferson Co. are not necessarily related to such an Inman family (if in fact Philadelphia should turn out to be in Inman).

Statements without reference to evidence are not evidence -- unless the person making the statement could be reasonably expected to have DIRECT personal knowledge relating to nature of the statement. --Carl

Re: Lebanon Presbyterian Church

Lebanon-in-the-Forks Presbyterian Church was located in east Knox Co. on the north side of the river where the Holtson and French Broad Rivers conjoin. The cemetery survives, but only the bell of the church, not mounted on a platform in the cemetery. I believe Ramsey compiled an early church history that was lost in a fire but recreated to the best of his abilities perhaps in the 1850's. --Carl

Anna Lee Cox -- Thursday, 18 January 2001, at 3:42 p.m.

Carl: I appreciate your response, but all I have is the marriage license for Mabel A. Smith and Hugh B. Cox, and the names were written by the same person. The handwriting matches that of the County Court Clerk, so I assume he filled it out. Also, I don't have a signature by Hugh Bayless Cox at all. I sent for two Social Security Applications by Hugh Cox's, but neither was the right one. Any other advice on pursuing would be appreciated. Maybe if I went to the clerk's office to see if they had an application for the license. They were married in Blount County but lived and were divorced in Knox County. Thanks again.

Re: Cox Family
Carl -- Friday, 19 January 2001, at 9:38 a.m.

I assumed you didn't have all three records since you didn't have the dates -- but I was trying to convey that your process is precisely that. You will find Hugh Cox's own signatures on the applications, on the divorce papers, and probably on a variety of other records. You may even find indication on later records as to how many times Hugh was married. You simply need to track those papers down and do a comparison. In the process, you will learn more about the kinds of records that are available, and that will aid you in future porjects. --Carl

Ernest Kesterson's daughter Niza
Carol Florimonte -- Saturday, 20 January 2001, at 1:15 a.m.

I am trying to do genealogy from the Knoxville TN area on my Lamb family. My late uncle Eugene(Gene) Lamb was married to a Niza Kesterson in the early 1920's in Knox. TN. Niza and Gene Lamb had one son Roy Willet Lamb. Niza's family owned a grocery store in the Knoxville area in the 1940's. Gene and Niza Lamb divorced when Roy Lamb was just a small child. I think Niza Kesterson-Lamb's father's name was Ernest Carl Kesterson.

Nelson/Waggoner
Barbara Cox -- Wednesday, 24 January 2001, at 9:34 p.m.

I am interested in any information on the Nelson Families of Knox. Specifically George Nelson. I believe his sister, Rebekah, married John A. Waggoner. John and Rebekah were born ab 1806 and were married in Knox County ab 1832 by George Nelson. John Waggoner died ab 1848 and Rebekah remarried to a Robert Findley in 1850. John and Rebekah had three sons, John, who was a magistrate in Coffee County, Tn, James (Jim), William Baker, and a daughter Sarah (Sally) who married James Anderson. The Waggoners were of German Descent and I believe went to Knox County from Cincinnati in the early 1800's or possibly late 1700's.

Will appreciate any information on both or either of these families.

Thank you,

Barbara Cox

My half Uncle W. Thomas GUIDER (son of Joseph and Ann Eliza TUCK GRIDER/GUIDER/GRYDER) married a Belle L. SMITH. When he wrote to her in 1912 she was living at 613 Randalph St., Knoxville, Tennessee. In Thomas letter he ask Belle if she know anything about Cleve. (Who is Cleve) He also ask how everyone is in Choto. In one of his letters he mentions a Ollie Keener (I think that is the last name.) Ollie must have run a boarding house in Memphis because that is where Thomas was staying. In one letter there is a NIPPERS mentioned. Later Belle lived at Concord, Tennessee. After Thomas and Belle married they lived at Lenoir City, Tennessee. They ran Tom's Cafe for awhile and maybe a grocery store. They had two daughters Geneva and Iris.
