FRANSE - Heiskell

Posted by Joyce Franse Minnich <Jminnich@mediaone.net> on Sun, 28 Mar 1999

Surname: FRANSE, YARNELL, INGRAM, REESE, ELY

My father was Henry A. Franse (b. 1916 in Heiskell). His father was John Isaac Franse (b. 1870, in Knox Co.), whose father was William Franse (b. Lee Co., Va.). I believe William Franse's father may be the William France from the book, "Early Settlers of Lee County, Virginia" since his brother, Adam R. France, with almost the same birthdate I have (3/28/1856) is listed, as well as a sister, Sarah, whose birth year is one year off (1855 instead of 1854). This book says that William France's wife, Elizabeth, born 1778, may have been Elizabeth Heiskell. And one of their children is listed as Heiskell France, b. 11/4/1862 (although I've never heard of him).

Anyway, with all this Heiskell stuff, I thought perhaps Heiskell may have been named for Elizabeth Heiskell France's family. I know my dad and all his brothers and sisters
were born and raised in Heiskell. Franse (spelled with an "s") is fairly uncommon and I would almost bet that all of us are related somehow.

There are several Luttrell's in my (Mcnutt) line including:

Robert Caldwell Mcnutt b1824 d1890 m Mary Elizabeth Lutrell b1828 d1905
( I have all of their children, as this is my g-grandfather)

his nephew also married a Luttrell:
George M. Mcnutt b1847 d1921 m Iva E. Luttrell b1860 d1940

As far as Sarah Mcnutt, I can only find one in my line (We had a lot of folks in the Knox Co. area at that time). I dont have a birth date for her, she was probably born about the time of Emsley fisher, which would put her father at 60+ when she was born, which is unlikely but possible...

I guess all the other good stuff liked loading, downloading, paste and copy will come later. I read a lot about the FTM, but do not know how to use this either. OH well enough about my fears of this computer. Now back to Newmans do you have anyone by the name of Taylor E, Newman or Vernon? This was my grandmother Mary Alice Newman Curnutts brothers. Hello,Jeff,

It was good to hear from you about James Reed and Matilda Levi. I can't find a connection so far..I had a fourth great grandfather who married two wives..a John "Jackie" Newman to a Nancy Crow and to a Polly Levi. My grandmother's maiden name was Hetty Clementine Reed who married my grandfather,Buther Lee Newman, from Knox CO,TN. I do have about two or three James Reeds in my Atchley Famiy Book by Dr. Paul L. Atchley and Mary Ann Morris Thompson in the second edition of their book on the Atchleys. But, none of these Reeds married a Levi that I can see in the book. But anything is possible. I'll sure let you know if I come across any info on them. Thanks for the response and let me know if you hear of anyone else, please.

Charity McCarrell Hood Obituary

Posted by Jeffrey B. Berry <jeffbberry@aol.com> on Fri, 12 Mar 1999

I went to the University of Tennessee library and found the following obituary for Charity McCarrell in the Knoxville Journal and Tribune January 1, 1917.

HOOD- Funeral services over the body of Mrs. Charity Hood, aged 92 years, who died Saturday afternoon at her home near Maryville, will be conducted this morning at 10:30 O' clock at Mount Olive Baptist Church, south of the city. Rev. Singleton will conduct the services. Interment will be in the family cemetery at Mount Olive. Mrs. Hood was the widow of Jordan Hood, one of the pioneer steamboat pilots on the Tennessee River. Her death is mourned by a large number of friends.

Tim, although there is a Mount Olive Cemetery next to the church, I believe since it states family cemetery at Mount Olive that she is buried at Ginn Cemetery whith her husband, parents, and grandparents. This cemetery is one mile from the church and has several families buried there.
