Martha Ann Tuck Crawford Knox County TN
EA Emert -- Saturday, 5 May 2001, at 9:14 p.m.

Hello,

I am trying to find my Crawford Tuck ancesters who lived in East Tennessee.(Knox,Anderson,Blount,Seiver,) My grgr grandmother was Martha Ann Tuck Crawfrod. Born according to tombstone April 23, 1863 died, December 31, 1900. According to a 1900, census record for Knox County TN, she was born March or May 1862. She married Adam Jhonson or Alexander Johnson,(I have not been able to confirm the first name yet) on December 6, 1888 in Knox County TN. AJ was born according to the tomb stone May 25, 1865, died April 7, 1945 in Knoxville TN. Both are buried in Solway Meth. Church Cemetery in the Solway area of Knox County, TN. I am pretty sure he went by John Crawford.

They had according to this 1900 census record, the following children: (I am not 100% sure this is them, because dates are not matching up. However since two children that I know they had, are listed,I am assuming that this is them because my gr gradmother was Maggie Crawford, and she had a brother named Charlie. The names of the children listed are:

1. John T. Sept 1889
2. Maggie P. April 1891 (my gr grandmother)
3. Nancy A. May 1893
4. George May 1894
5. Charles B. December 1896 (the other child I knew that AJ and Martha had)
6. Johnson March 1899

I am also trying to locate the family Bible for Martha Ann Tuck Crawford and AJ. I was told by family that one once existed. I was told that Martha's Son Charlie Crawford had the Bible. However, this may not be true. It could just be family lure. If anyone has any information about a family Bible for Martha Ann Tuck Crawford and AJ Crawford, please e-mail me at eaemert@aol.com

If anyone has any information that might help me to locate Martha Ann Tuck Crawford's parents,or family please e-mail me at eaemert@aol.com. I don't know who Martha Ann Tuck Crawford's parents are. But any information about the family would be welcoome. Just a note family lore says that Martha was said to be part or full cherokee, I have heard both.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Re: Concord Masonic Cemetery/Saville
Toby M. Boring -- Wednesday, 9 May 2001, at 3:53 a.m.

There is not an incorporated town of Concord, though there is "downtown Concord", on Fort Loudon Lake. First, locate the incorporated town of Farragut, approximately 20 miles west of downtown Knoxville (via Kingston Pike is easiest). From Farragut, turn south on Concord Road off of Kingston Pike. After about 3 miles, Concord will be to your left - if you go one bridge too far, you will cross a portion of Fort Loudon Lake and be in Concord Park. The Masonic Lodge and cemetery are about 50 yards NW behind Concord Presbyterian Church. It is hard to get lost in Concord.

HELTON - WILSON - PARTIN - HENDERSON
Miss >^oo^< Kitty of Los Gatos California -- Thursday, 17 May 2001, at 9:53 a.m.

I have been searching for the last six years for the parents of my grandmother BESSIE "LOU" LOUISE HELTON. She was born in 1905. She can be found on a census for KNOX Co., TN with her two siblings ALFRED and CHRYSTINE HELTON.

I was told but have not been able to prove, that my great grandfather DAVID WILLIAM HELTON was an employee of a railroad company. I was told but have yet to find a proper death certificate(or marriage or birth or...!!?) for him as he was said to have died during a "train coupling accident" around 1912 to 1920 time frame.

Accident or divorce I dont know, but RUBY ESMERALDA WILSON left her kids (I was told) with HELTON family and married a man named A. L. ANDERSEN and moved to CINCINNATTI OHIO where they had two more sons.

I found that this man was an employee alongwith one of his sons, of the postal service there in Cincinnatti, Ohio.

I looked for a marriage bond or any kind of paperwork that would verify the marriage between my great grandma RUBY ESMERALDA WILSON and A.L. ANDERSEN.

I also search for marriage record for RUBY ESMERALDA WILSON and DAVID WILLIAM HELTON in the early part 1899 thru 1905 in the TENNESSEE area.

Again, I have found no paper trail and was hoping that sooner or later (Ill take sooner!) someone would see these names and they would "ring a bell"...until then...good luck on your own personal searches.

Kitty Elizabeth Partin can be contacted at kittyparton@Yahoo.com

MONTGOMERY
Carol A. Coble -- Thursday, 17 May 2001, at 10:30 a.m.

There is a Samuel MONTGOMERY listed in the 1830 census of Knox Co., TN. Can anyone give me the rest of the information on him. He was born 1786 and his wife (which One?) was born 1790. She is Nancy Jones, supposedly married 1807 where? Some of the family was in Blount Co., TN in the 30s. There were two Samuels, one born 1785 and ours 1786. This makes it very difficult to identify. The 1786 one is the son of Thomas and Mary Patton and the 1785 one is the son of James and ? Wear. Our Samuel was in the 1850 census of Carroll Co. TN and then on to Dade Co., MO about 1851.

Raby in Knox Co and surrounding area
Donald E Raby -- Wednesday, 23 May 2001, at 7:02 p.m.

Raby Family History: Knox Co TN descendants of James, Sherwood, Samuel

This is summary of research by Donald Ernest Raby, a work in progress.
According to 1830 Census the first Rabys in Knox Co TN were Robert, James and Sherwood. In 1840 TN Census three new names are found: James, Squire, John. In Rowan Co NC 1820 there was James Raby with five males and
1 female children. James was born in NC 1780. His wife name is Nancy; according to Squire Raby they were both dead in 1861. This matches in age and date and leads me to conclude that James is father of Robert, Sherwood, James, Squire and John.
Robert married Lucinda Williamson in Stokes Co NC in 1822. Descendants of Robert lived in Hardin Valley and Solway area near Beaver Creek where some still live. Susan married Eleazor Cobb, William married Nancy Howard, Margaret J. married James Bullen, Mary married Clisby Cobb, Frances married Sam Lee,
George married Caroline Pitts, Nancy married Christian Ruffner, Kesiah married Iredell Crawford, and Elizabeth married John Crawford.
Thanks to Bobbie Rather Raby, Flossie Raby, Lyman Raby, Gladys Raby Hunt and others for information on the “Solway” Rabys.

William Raby married Nancy Howard and they lived on Campbell Station Rd. William this first born of Robert joined the Union and died in camp at Cumberland Gap in 1862 of disease. His widow Nancy raised his six children on the farm located on Campbell St Rd. The descendants of Landon (Orlando) still reside in the Farragut/Concord area today. Thanks to Grace Raby Coker and Geneva Raby for help with this Concord Branch of Raby.

Sherwood married Sarah Strange 11-18-1828 in Knox Co. TN. Sarah was also from Rowan Co NC, and probably came over the mountains together. The 1830 census shows Sherwood with wife and 1 female child under 5. There was possibly a son, named Sherwood (Sherrod) born 1832. It is unknown what happened to Sarah, assumed died. There is a family tradition with Haney family about Sarah being Cherokee and she divorced Sherwood and left with Eliza Ann. About 1838 they were taken on trail of Tears, where Eliza fell back and was rescued by Haney family. She married son Thomas Haney. This story has strong family tradition with Haney descendants. There is some confusion with the information found in Strange Family of Swearing Creek that indicates English heritage of Sarah Strange. This is still under investigation.

Sherwood marries widow Lucinda Hord 1833. Sherrod is found in household of Robert in 1850 census, age 17. Robert had a daughter Frankey who is also 17 in 1850. Frances Raby married Samuel Lee 1850. Interviews with descendants offer no knowledge of twin of Frankey. There is some memory of Sherrod (Sherwood) Raby with descendants of Robert. From this it is concluded that Sherrod is son of Sherwood and Sara, Sara died and Sherrod is raised in household of Robert.
Sherrod married Sara Long 1853. After conscription by Confederates he escaped. After war he moved to Missouri where he died in Redbird 1891.
One family tradition is that he joined the Union and was captured in Neunan GA and escaped from Andersonville POW camp and returned home. No records have been found to support this.
James and Nancy Raby had two daughters: Elizabeth and Nancy. Elizabeth married William Young in Stokes Co NC 1816. They migrated to TN with James.
The Youngs moved to White Co TN before 1850 and her parents James and Nancy Raby may have gone with them. Daughter Nancy married James Hood in 1837. They settled in Roane Co. Squire Raby was bondsman for marriage of Nancy Raby and James Hood.

James jr. married Margaret (Peggy) Williamson in Knox Co 1832 and settled in Roane, Loudon CO with living descendants there today. His descendants are living in Sweetwater, Loudon and Roane Co. The children are: Nancy Ann, Lucinda, Louisa, Elijah, Frances, William Sanders, John C.
Elijah R. married Melinda Brown. William Sanders R. married 1st Elizabeth Sharp and 2nd Sarah Sharp. John C. married Lucinda Caroline Moss. More information is available on these descendant of James Raby Jr.

Son of Elijah and Melinda (Brown) Raby; Francis Marion Raby married Maude Acock and settled in Oliver Springs area. Their son Sanie Daniel married Jessie Beatrice Gordon and their children and grandchildren live in Oliver Springs area today. This family is under study presently and will updated when fully researched. Thanks to Billie Snow, Archie Raby and Jessie June Raby Nelson and Pat McDonald and Sonny Harvey for their assistance.

John married Joanna Nave in Knox Co TN 1837. They moved to Missouri in middle 1850s. Squire married Nancy Mourfield in Knox Co TN 1836. They moved to Mecklenburg Co KY in middle 1850s. John and Squire probably migrated together. John and Squire were bondsmen for each other.

About the same time Sherwood, wife Lucinda, and two children Samuel and Mary Jane with husband Bartley Jones travel to Overton Co TN where they are in 1860 census. One tradition in family of Squire was that three Raby brothers crossed Cumberland Gap and went different directions, never to meet again. I have contacted descendants of all children of James and Nancy Raby. There is a lot more work to do as time proceeds. My family is the focus of current study.

The following information is from public records and confirmed by family sources Sherwood Raby b.1800? NC married Lucinda Hord July 25,1833 in Knox Co.

Children: Mary Jane Raby (1835) and Samuel A. Raby (1841)
Lucinda Hord, widow of Thomas J. Hord who died 1831. Maiden name most likely Luttrell (Lucinda Luttrell married Thomas Hord in Fauquier Va in 1825). She is listed born in VA. 1802. d. 5-15-1888 Hord link in Overton Co. TN?? She owned one acre and house on Kingston Pike in Loveville until 1887. She also reacquired 200 acres in 1867 for $49 tax bill that were lost by her son James Hord in 1852. (Chancery court & Property Deeds)
Her 1888 death date is found on Bible page in Raby family. Burial is unknown.
Also confirmed in Overstreet Bible of her granddaughter Lucinda Jane Jones Overstreet. Hord Children: Thomas Hord 1825, James Hord 1828,

Sarah Hord Roberts1830 (Hiram).
Mary Jane married Bartley Rufus Jones, two daughters Sarah and Lucinda Jane.
Mary Jane died before Civil War. Bartley Jones was in Union Calvary. After the war Bartley married Martha Letsinger and they had several more children.
Sarah Jones married Charles B. Russell and is buried in Scarborough Cam. Lucinda Jane Jones married James Henry Overstreet and lived in Morgan Co.
Thanks to Pat Cosand (my “Sister” in genealogy) for this connection. She descends from Mary Jane Raby Jones and Lucinda Jane Jones.

Samuel A. Raby, Sr. b. 2-15-1841 Loveville, Knox Co TN d. 12-29-1915
Lived in Knox Co 1865-1880; Morgan Co 1880-1884; Anderson Co 1884-1915.
Buried in New Hope Cem. by E. Gate of Y-12, Scarborough back of Oak Ridge.

July 2000 I visited the State Archives in Raliegh NC and searched for two days the links to early Rabys in America. I have many notes to sort and retrace, but
no positive connection before James Raby born 1780 and living in Fork of Yadkin in Rowan Co NC 1820 has been established. On return trip, I stopped in Franklin NC and visited Albert Raby with whom I hac corresponded. His earliest ancestor is Frederick Raby Sr. found in Burke Co NC 1800. I believe it is possible that James and Frederick Sr were brothers of first cousins, but this is not documented. Hopefully further research can be completed to find the connections. Before 1790s most Rabys are found in Coastal counties of Eastern NC. Bertie, Gates, Tyrell, Hertford. There are many Rabys in Nansemond (Suffolk ) Co VA just across the state line from Gates and Bertie Co NC.

Earliest reference to Raby is a Robert Raby found in 1635 among 14 colonists transported from England by Robert Bennett. Bennett received 700 acres on Nansemond River. Three Rabys, Adam, Blake, and Luke were in the Revolution as privates with two of them listed as deserters.

I am very grateful for the support and encouragement I have received in this project. Thanks to all the family, both known and newly discovered. I am happy that we can make the connection and discover our ancestors together. Most of all I appreciate your sharing your memories, Bibles, photographs and Love.
I am continuing to seek contact with any researchers and sources to expand this
history of Raby in America. I am also seeking corrections and modifications of the current work. Please contact me for further information:

Knox County births ca 1789
Shirley -- Wednesday, 30 May 2001, at 5:20 p.m.

As I understand it, Knox County, did not exist in 1789, but I found a published "In Memorium" yesterday reading the microfilm newspapers at the local library. It was published April 25, 1874 in the Richmond Conservator (MO). It reads in part, "Mrs. Phebia Ball, consort of Rev. Joseph H. Ball, was born in Knox county, Tennessee, January 7th, 1789. She emigrated with her father, (John Slaughter,) to Kentucky when quite young, and was married to Rev. Joseph H. Ball, A. D. 1803. Afterwards emigrated with a large family of relatives to Limestone county, Alabama, in 1810. While living in Alabama she
united with the M. E. Church South, and has proved faithful to her trust up to the day of her death. She emigrated from their (sic)to Missouri, near Richmond, Ray county in 1824. Died April 17th, 1874, at (Mrs. M. Shreve) her daughter's residence near Albany, Ray county, Mo."
Does anyone reading this have the capability & willingness to do a lookup or give any help as to whether the published info could be correct. Was the John Slaughter family in TN at this time?
