Is anyone out there researching the Harvey family of the Harvey Road area of West Knox County near Shady Grove Church? The patriarch of the family was Thomas Harvey, born circa 1765, died 1838. He is supposedly buried in Shady Grove Church cemetery, but I was unable to find a stone (a readable one anyway). Many of his descendants are buried there, though. Some moved to Roane County.Thomas is my 4th great grandfather.

Surname:
I began researching my Humphreys several years ago beginning in January for a Christmas present to my father the following December. At that time, I gave him all my research materials and did not keep a copy. He has since passed away and I do not know where the information is. The information I am posting here is strictly from an already overworked memory and I am trying to piece the information back together again. My ggrandfather was Joseph McConnell Humphrey of Bluegrass (now West Knoxville), TN. Joe was married first to Harriet Letitia Medlin who is buried in the old Cedar Springs cemetery next to what I believe to be her father and his wife. After Harriett died, Joe married her younger sister Aggie Medlin. From Joe's first marriage the children were: Minnie, Grace and Bessie. Joe and Aggie had "a whole slew of children". The names I remember were Floyd, Arthur (I think), John?, and Lilian. There may have been a Howard, but that name is not ringing a bell.
Joseph McConnell Humphrey was the son of Elijah Humphrey, a confederate soldier who died on the poor farm in Knoxville. I have been told that both these Humphrey men are buried "in the cemetery at Ebenezer", but did not find marked grave locations at Cedar Springs or Grace. Our Rebel Elijah was the son of Elijah Humprey and Nancy Wilhite that came into Tennessee via Sneedsville, TN.
I hope this helps you or someone else.

LISBY & CLIBOURN

Surname: MARTIN, LISBY, LISBEY, CLIBOURN, CLAIBORNE
I have just learned that there was a Moses LISBY in Knox Co. who had several daughters about the age of Betsy LISBY. Is Moses the father of Betsy? Moses was married to a Lucy whose maiden name appears as CLIBOURN in the October 1843, Knox Co. Court Minutes discussing the administrator and executor of the deceased Moses' estate.I wonder about the spelling of Lucy's maiden name because on 8Dec1828 there was another MARTIN-LISBEY marriage. William MARTIN married Mary LISBEY. The bondsman for that marriage was a Jubal CLAIBORNE.

I have been researching the Cruze (Crews) line and know that some married Ellis's and Jinks's. Caldona Cruze married Dr. Thomas Nelso Ellis in the 1880s. Two sister, Martha and Margaret Cruze married James Tarlton Jinks and David Jinks in the 1880s. Have you heard of any of these? I have their lines up to date.6th Tennessee Infantry, USA

Does anyone have any info on a George MARTIN who married Betsy LISBY on 10 Mar 1837 in Knox Co., TN? I would like to know the names of their children to confirm that this couple are my ancestors. I am hoping that this couple are George Washington MARTIN and his wife Elizabeth who died in Reynolds Co., MO in 1879 and 1889, respectively. Of course, info on parents & siblings also welcome. Is the George who married Betsy a brother to Robert W. MARTIN who married Lettitia WALTON in Kingston, TN in 1843?

Juanita,In the 1850 Overton Co, TN census these families are all living very close to one another, some in the same household:

(next neighbor is BEASON family - one son age 9 named Sevier BEASON)
Jessee SHERRELL age 25 b. TN, wife Nancy age 26, children George 7, Elizabeth 4, Sarah 5, David 1.
John SEVIER, age 60 Justice of the Peace, b. TN; wife Rhoda, age 59 b. TN; sons William 33, John 25, James 22, Alfred 20, George 17 and Sarah Scrivner age 17.

Abram SEVIER, age 48 b. TN, wife Mary, age 42 TN, 5 children; also in same household is John CLARY age 20, Levinia CLARY age 17.
Several OVERSTREET families, too.
Is this a strange coincidence, or are these families related to the Bonnie Kate Sherrill/John Sevier family?
John and Lavinia named their first son Agrippa Valentine CLARY, their 2nd son John Rutherford CLARY.
Any help would be most welcome.

Surname: FISK, ALLRED, BAKER, CLINE, BROWN, HASH
My gggrandfather, Crawford Fisk (b. abt. 1838, married Martha Allred (b. abt. 1832, dau of William Allred, b.1806 in Knox Co., TN, m. Elizabeth Brown of Blount Co. AL) who was from Alabama. They moved to Marion (now Baxter) County, AR before the Civil War. Martha had a sister named Carey Ann who was living with them during that time. Crawford was killed by jayhawkers in his dooryard before his pregnant wife's eyes while home on leave from Mitchell's 14th Arkansas Confederate Army Infantry Regiment to get in winter firewood for his wife shortly before my ggrandfather, James C. Fisk, was born on March 30, 1865. Carey Ann Allred ran to the neighbors to get help. According to family tradition, Crawford Fisk's older brother was Jim Fisk of the Jay Gould/Jim Fisk railroad scandals in New York in the 1870's and 1880's. Would be happy to correspond with you if this info rings a bell. Am particularly seeking information on Crawford Fisk, but Allred/Brown information would be helpful as well. Thanks in advance for your help.Mara Fisk

The Mabry-Hazen House Museum (Knoxville, Knox County) also takes care of the Bethel Confederate Cemetery. Most of the Confederate casualties in the Battle of Knoxville (over 800 in less than 20 minutes) were buried on the battlefield but later their bodies were reinterred at Bethel Cemetery. There is a list of those buried there at Mabry-Hazen. Not all of them were.
Supply the name in writing to them and send a pre-addressed, stamped envelope for the most rapid reply.
The book, "Divided Loyalties", by Dr. Digby Seymour, is the most comprehensive book on the Knoxville Campaign, written for the Civil War Centennial period (1961-1965).
