Sword/Soard

Posted by Richard Soard <rsoard@mindspring.com> on Sat, 24 Oct 1998

Surname: SWORD, SOARD

Dear Ronda,

What I know about your Henry A. SWORD came from 1850/1860 TN census and marriage records in my search for my Henry SOARD who lived in Claiborne county TN. There are a number of SOARD/SWORD surnames in Knox during this period and because of the close proximity to Claiborne, it seems likely they could be related. I assume that since your genealogy page doesn't list anything beyond your Henry A. SWORD, you have no speculation where he came from -- if you do please let me know.

My Henry SOARD was born in TN (probably Grainger county) about 1810 and died in Tazewell, Claiborne on Straight Creek about 1865 after returning from Civil War duty for CSA. He was married three times, his third wife, Rebecca HOLLINGSWORTH-HACKER (a widow) is the marriage I am descended from. Their children are Pinckney SOARD (my g/gf), Philip Isaac SOARD, John W. SOARD, Thomas David SOARD, Samuel Brown SOARD, Lucy SOARD. All lived and died in east TN except my g/gf Pinckney who moved to Oklahoma with his second wife and family around 1901.

My Henry SOARD left no clues as to his ancestry. I have researched several times in Knox, Claiborne and Grainger courthouses, libraries, cemeteries and have found nothing but circumstantial evidence of his heritage. After many years of research by myself and other descendants it is BELIEVED that Henry SOARD'S father is Philip SWORD who was born in Washington county, VA about 1768. Philip married Elizabeth KELLEY in Greene county, TN in 1788 but they resided in Russell county, VA (formed from Washington) until about 1806 when they moved to Grainger county TN where my Henry was likely born. Philip disappears from Grainger records after 1817.

Philip's father is BELIEVED to be Henry SWORD who died in Washington county, VA in 1776. This 1776 Henry is BELIEVED to be the founder of SWORD'S CREEK, VA on a tributary to the Clinch River in present day Russell county. It is unknown where Henry SWORD came from but some research (which has been determined to be fraudulent) indicates he came from eastern PA where his ancestors arrived in 1741 from Germany. Descendants of several of my Henry SOARD's children say their family tradition is Scots-Irish which is consistent with what has been handed down in my line.

I appreciate your info and hope you will let me know if you have any guesses about where you Henry A. came from. If you want more detail on mine I will be happy to provide.
