Mrs. Walter Starnes Nash, Founder of Knoxville Woman's Club
It is well to be a founder
    Of a club so worth while;
To know members of years gone by
   And all records on file.
You madam Founder of this club
   Is the inspiration
On what a member could achieve
   In self-education.
You've been a friend to club women
   Promoted them one by one
Toward the greater walks of life
To prove their work well done.
Years have slipped by since you saw
   The awakening of life
In this club of splendid women
   Doomed for pleasure or sarife.
'Twas woman who rocked the cradle
   Woman who reared great men,
And in courage had little thought
As to what might have been.
But women have always been brave
   Each a story to tell,
And today in time of warfare
   Will serve their country well.
We honor you today Eva Nash
   As the true club founder,
The one who has been most loyal
   To every club member.
Some have come and some have gone
   With the passing of years,
But there's no change of progress
And no change of club cheers.

-- Mrs. Charles L. Larew, Poet Laureate, Knoxville Woman's Club

Ode to Eva Nash -- Club Song

Dedicated and presented to the founder of the Knoxville Woman's Club, Eva Nash (Mrs. Walter Starnes Nash) on Founderr's Day, February 17th, 1939, by Mrs. Fred DeRobertis, music chairman. Words composed and set to music by Mrs. Charles L. Larew, president of the club, and officially adopted by the boyd on March 24th as the annual Founder's Day Song.
          Mrs. Charles L. Larew, President
          Mrs. Fred DeRobertis, Music Chairman

There's a joy in our hearts that is ever so gay
There's a song in our soul ringing softly each day,
There's a friend in memory that no one can fill --
A woman's free gift of love that lingers still.

Chorus:

It is to you fair Eva and your heart of gold,
Long may you live in bounty and never grow old.
'Tis your deeds of kindness -- no word that is a rash
Oh, God bless our club founder Eva Nash.

Ev'ry flower has a life to give to someone,
And so the stars shine on those whose work is well done.
'Tis you Eva who has a bright spirit for all --
Your true love has cheered us and ever in call.

(To the tune of Mother Machree.)

A Prayer for the Day -- The Correct Version of Our Club Collect

Keep us, Oh God, from pettiness; let us be large in thought, in word, in deed.
Let us be done with fault finding and leave off self-seeking.
May we put away all pretense and meet each other face to face -- without self-pity and without prejudice.
May be never be hasty in judgment and always generous.
Let us take time for all things; make us to grow calm, serene, gentle.
Teach us to put into action our better impulses, straight-forward, and unafraid.
Grant that we may realize it is the little things that create differences, that in the big things of life we are at one.
And may we strive to touch and to know the great comjon human heart of us all, and, oh, Lord God, let us forget not to be kind.
-- Mary Stewart

The President's Message

Dear Club Members:

I am deeply sensible of the responsibility assumed as the mantle of the Presidency of the Knoxville Woman's Club, which has been worn with such noteworthy distinction by my predecessors, falls upon my shoulders, and as I gratefully acknowledge the honor you have conferred upon me, may I ask for the aid, support, and cooperation of each individual member, not only in spirit, but in suggestions and work, so that by our combined efforts we strengthen the traditions that have made this organization a success.

In a self-governing body, a difference of opinion is sure to arise, but in that event I shall endeavor to rule in fairness and equity, for truly, my only thought for the ensuing year will be for the extension of the scope of usefulness, the enlarging of the sphere of service and the expansion of the circle of influence of the Knoxville Woman's Club.

-- Mrs. D. W. Richards
